I was walking in our neighborhood this morning after finishing today’s Cultural Commentary, and came upon two boys waiting on the sidewalk for the school bus. They appeared to be in fifth or sixth grade. As it was cold in Dallas this morning, they could see their breath in the chilly air. When I came upon them, they were competing to see who could blow the best “smoke rings.” They were completely oblivious to my presence.
I immediately thought about the innocence and joy of youth. They were enjoying God’s creation on a beautiful Friday morning, paying no attention to anyone else. When was the last time I did the same?
David might have been tending sheep in the vast emptiness of Judea when he wrote Psalm 19: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard” (vs. 1-3). The catch is, we must listen.
Our Father calls us to “be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). When will you accept his invitation today?
