Conner Jones: [00:00:00] Hi, I’m Conner Jones.

Micah Tomasella: I’m Micah Tomasella,

Conner Jones: and this is Culture Brief, a Dennison Forum podcast where we navigate the constant stream of top news in politics, sports, pop culture and entertainment, technology, everything. If it’s happening in the world, we are talking about it and we’re doing it all from a Christian perspective.

And Micah has been a busy week in the news and entertainment and everything. You wanna give us just a quick rundown on what we’re hitting on?

Micah Tomasella: First and foremost, we’re on video people. Hey. So if you’re listening on Spotify, if you wanna listen to us on YouTube. You can watch us if you’d like. You can look at our ugly mugs as we record this podcast every week.

We’re excited to add this onto our podcast just so you guys can kind of step into the living room with us as we’re just having a conversation about what’s going on in culture. So stay tuned for that as we continue to implement that, but we’re excited to have that video component. Yeah. So we’re gonna just do a general political roundup today.

Talk about all of the different things going on, all the different deals, all of the different little [00:01:00] wars going on around the world. Mm-hmm. We’re also just gonna talk about the betting scandals and the high cost of legalized sports gambling, specifically with the story coming out of the NBA. We’ll also give you an update on some scented stamps, so stay tuned for that.

We’ve got some mailbag stuff, hurricane Melissa, drug boats in Venezuela, and so much more. So let’s jump into the brief,

Conner Jones: the brief. Okay, Micah, you mentioned it. We’re gonna do a political roundup because it’s just been a crazy week. There’s too much happening. It’s almost too much to keep up with. And that’s with Trump not even being in the country.

And normally when he’s in the country, it feels like it’s just constant stuff outta the White House, but he’s not even here and yet. I mean,

Micah Tomasella: I, this is kind of all coming out with him being. Somewhat tame because he’s not here right now. He’s, he’s focused on those deals internationally.

Conner Jones: So let’s talk about that first. Where, where has he been? He’s been on this Asia tour all, basically all week. It’s like a six day tour, right? He is, as we’re recording, he’s on day entering day six, the final day of this tour, every before he comes back home, his first stop was in [00:02:00] Qatar. That was for a just fuel stop for Air Force One.

While he was there, he brought the Amir of Qatar on. Just basically to thank him for his help in essentially signing a peace deal with Israel and negotiating all of that and just continuing to build that relationship. And remember, Qatar’s the one who is. Donated to the $400 million, right. Future Air Force one.

So they met on the old Air Force one. I’m sure it will be back with the new one in a few years. And then Trump moved on to Malaysia where he met with several different Southeastern Asian leaders, made some trade deals with Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia itself, as well as helped sign a deal that he helped broker between Thailand and Cambodia.

Because they had basically border clashes earlier this year. Yeah. And so now that’s kind of at peace. They’ve signed this peace deal, made some agreements, and he was at the center of that. So he’s been very busy in that kind of portion of the world. And then he moved on to Japan. In Japan. He met with the brand new Prime Minister.

Her name is Sene tci. I don’t think I said that but it’s something [00:03:00] around that. And she’s the first female prime minister. She just got elected, I wanna say, two or three weeks ago. She’s

Micah Tomasella: the, she’s unique because she’s female and pretty hard line conservative too. So she’s, she’s just kind of a unique candidate, but I think, I think her and Trump will probably hit it off pretty well.

Did you see that thing about the F1 fifties?

Conner Jones: No.

Micah Tomasella: Okay, so she, she offered to buy like a fleet of F1 fifties and Trump was like, it’s a beautiful truck. It truly is. It’s a beautiful truck.

Conner Jones: Micah, I know you like that. You’re a big F-150 guy. I am. And I am. That, that’s what you drive. Tough.

Micah Tomasella: So they say.

Conner Jones: But at the same time, you know what’s funny about that is Trump made a deal essentially, or got Toyota to commit $10 billion, I think to us facilities and infrastructure. And so he was, he told everybody, go buy new Toyotas. So you got the Japanese Prime Minister saying, go buy F1 fifties. He’s saying, go buy Toyotas.

Micah Tomasella: So look, it’s all about, so all these commercials guys, pay attention to the commercials that you watch. And Conner, I’m not trying to get us off track here, but pay attention to the commercials. All of these. [00:04:00] Car companies, Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, they’re, they’re all like pro-America commercials. Mm-hmm. And it’s all about, it’s assembled in America and our plant is in this small town and South Carolina, or whatever it might be.

So this concept of being assembled in America, even though the parts come internationally, that’s a big deal for people right now, specifically for Trump.

Conner Jones: It absolutely is. It’s a big deal. Yeah. I mean, it makes you kind of wanna buy it. You’re like, oh man, that’s American made in a way. Yeah, for sure. It might be a Japanese company, but it’s made by American hands and you’re supporting these people in our own country.

Okay. But they made a trade deal and Trump’s just been on a trade deal bonanza, essentially. ’cause then he went to South Korea. He just arrived in South Korea just a few hours ago from when we were recording and he met with the South Korean leader. They made a trade deal as well. So it’s just been this big trade thing.

But the big meeting. Though Micah that everyone’s waiting to see is Trump meeting with the Chinese leader Q, because obviously that’s our biggest kind of like trade FO right now. Maybe military foe [00:05:00] in a way. And so this is a big deal that these two leaders are meeting and so we’ll just see what comes outta that, that is happening on Thursday.

So by the time you’re listening to this, we may have some details that came out of that. Either trade details, security details. AI cybersecurity, TikTok is gonna be talked about. Maybe Taiwan, who knows? There’s a lot that could be discussed, but this is a big deal that these two leaders are meeting for the first time in Trump’s second term.

They apparently have a plan for Trump to go back to Beijing next year, cheating to come to the US next year. So hopefully this is a continuing dialogue and we reached some good agreements there, but there’s a lot that could be at stake in this meeting. Okay. While on this whole tour, Trump was obviously on Air Force one quite a bit, so he was talking to the press on Air Force one, and they specifically asked him several times about running for a third term in 2028.

Initially, he kind of like, you know, he dabbled and he is I don’t know, I would really love to do it. And then he would throw out a name. Names really. He threw out JD Vance and Marco Rubio basically has two names that would be an unstoppable force if they ran together, but he’d like to see them.

Everybody remembers [00:06:00] his apprentice days. He likes to pit people kind of against each other so that they’re, they show more loyalty or work harder or whatnot. All that to say, he recognizes that Vance and Rubio. They’re, they’re strong contenders for 2028. And he also did say just this morning that he recognizes the constitution prevents him from running for a third term.

And he literally said I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad. ’cause he’s talking about how he thinks he’s got his highest polls or whatever. He’s

Micah Tomasella: just trolling. You know what I mean? Mm-hmm. And I’m not saying that necessarily excuses all the things that he says. Some of it always, some of it feels unnecessary For sure.

But I, I, I personally, I, I never thought it was anything other than, than trolling just because, you know, you talk about things that are clear cut. The 22nd Amendment is just so clear cut on a president not having a third term. I, I just was like, I don’t see any way around this. And then it would get to the Supreme Court.

This doesn’t feel like a gray area thing where a conservative court would be like, oh, okay, this is okay. No the 22nd Amendment is so clear. [00:07:00] So I, I guess I just always kind of thought of it as just a troll.

Conner Jones: The Speaker of the house, Mike Johnson said so just yesterday Really? He’s yeah, no. The 22nd Amendment’s pretty clear on that.

And so even he’s kind of trying to get Trump to back away from that. I think the whole idea, yeah, it worked. I think, you know, who else is Mike Johnson

Micah Tomasella: saying that led Trump to say that, but yeah, it

Conner Jones: probably did. Yeah. You know, who else is thinking about running in 2028? Wanna take a guess? Kam. Is correct.

She was on a Harris was on a BBC interview with the British this weekend and she said it’s very possible that I will run against. So everybody’s keeping their, their, you know, their options open, I suppose. We’ll just see 2028 feels so far away, yet so close. She won’t make it outta

Micah Tomasella: the Democratic primary.

Conner Jones: She may not, I don’t know. We’ll just have to

Micah Tomasella: see. I think there’s stronger candidates in that field than, than her.

Conner Jones: There could be, obviously Gavin Newsom’s already throwing his hat in the ring Pritzker.

Micah Tomasella: Maybe yeah.

Conner Jones: Anyways. Okay. Let’s talk about what’s happening at home. Trump’s been in Asia this whole time, but what’s been happening back here?

Mm-hmm. And he’s still had his, you [00:08:00] know, his fingers and everything over here too, including with Canada. So the, the premier of Ontario, that’s basically their governor in Ontario, Canada. He he paid for this ad to go out during the World Series in which the Toronto Blue Jays are playing the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Oh yeah. So Toronto’s got a team in there. I forgot about this. A lot of Americans are watching the World Series and this ad airs, I think it was Thursday night or Friday night. This ad airs during the World Series. That is Ronald Reagan’s voice behind this whole speech from the 1980s, I think 87. 87, where he is talking about the damage that tariffs do.

And man, that ad aired and Trump went off on truth social and was just like. He went ballistic. He was mad and he, he basically said, I’m gonna raise tariffs on Canada now by 10% for airing this ad. He claimed the ad was fake, like it wasn’t really what Reagan said. The Reagan foundation came out and also criticized the ad, and they were like it, it was his word, but it was out, it was out context and out of order.

It wasn’t the

Micah Tomasella: right context. Yeah,

Conner Jones: and it was out of order. Like it, they, they rearranged some of the sentences, but did

Micah Tomasella: they really?

Conner Jones: Some of the meaning was still [00:09:00] there, right? The bulk of what Reagan was trying to emphasize, still kinda there. So yeah, it made, it made Trump mad. He’s I’m gonna raise tariffs by 10%.

The prime minister of candidate Mark Carney, he basically just man, this, this wasn’t great. Maybe we shouldn’t have done this. They pulled the ad down. He had the premier of Ontario, Doug Ford pull the out. They apologized. They apologized. Just a headache, man. But at the same time, you can see why Ford would do that, because he was like.

I gotta protect my people in Ontario and we’re, we’re totally,

Micah Tomasella: totally, you know, we have to understand the Canadian perspective in this. This is heavily impacting them. It definitely is Canada,

our home and native land. That’s right. I, I dunno, you

just busted out like you were very confident.

Hope it was right. I thought we have a, a mailbag question later from a Canadian Yes. Yes we do. A Canadian citizen. And so that was for you. There you go.

Conner Jones: We, we’ve got Canadian listeners and we would love to hear y’all’s perspective, honestly. ’cause obviously we present everything. Yes. Mostly from an American’s perspective.

Yes. Let us know what you think [00:10:00] up in Canada. That’s right. What do you think about all this? Okay. Back in DC as everybody knows, and I’ve seen the images of the East Wing of the White House was completely demolished. Yeah. This obviously had a like shock and awe factor to it. Everybody was just like, whoa.

Where did, where did this come from? How did, how did we just all of a sudden lose the entire east wing of. The actual White House. It just happened outta nowhere. Obviously a lot of people upset. I think a lot of that came from the shock and awe factor and just Trump demanding it happen without really asking anybody, which he doesn’t technically have to.

You don’t have to get permission from anyone, it is the executive’s house. So he did it and he just went for it. And this is obviously to make room for this new ballroom that he wants to have. The ballroom is going to be fully privately funded, so it’s not any tax dollars going to build this.

He’s got donors who have stepped up to pay the, I wanna say, $300 million tab to build this big project. Over the next few years, it’ll be done before Trump leaves the White House and it’s gonna be huge. It’s gonna change the entire look of the White House, but that east winging man, it’s [00:11:00] gone. And a lot of people were mad, and I, I, I’m trying to fully grasp why everybody was upset about this because really, honestly, when you hear about the White House, you never hear about the East Wing.

Everything happens in the West Wing or in the residence, right? The East Wing is where the First ladies offices were, a couple other communications offices and the visitor center, essentially. So it’s not like they tore down this big, massively historic section of the East Wing. In fact, it was only built.

In 1942 by FDR, when World War II was going on, he wanted a bomb shelter. So to cover for the building and digging of the bomb shelter underground, they added the East wing on top of that. Okay, so people that are against this, obviously demolition is they’re, they’re saying that this is just a big metaphor for Trump’s entire presidency, that he just takes a wrecking ball to everything.

Micah Tomasella: That’s right.

Conner Jones: Kind of true, but also, you know, this is a little bit different. This is not something that’s gonna impact tons of people. In fact, it’s very small scale when you think about it. And norm breaking president. It’s just norm breaking. Yeah.

Micah Tomasella: Law, law breaking is where the, [00:12:00] the debate really comes in.

But yes, norm breaking. For sure,

Conner Jones: definitely.

Micah Tomasella: He hasn’t stuck to any norms whatsoever. This is true.

Conner Jones: So I, I, I don’t even think anybody’s really that surprised by this. They will tell, people will say this is America’s house. This is the people’s house. You know, it belongs to them. You can’t just upend something like that.

But at the same time, people who are like, he can do whatever he wants are saying it’s the executive’s house. And the American people voted him in. So he should be able to do what he thinks is best for the White House and for the country in that terms. And a lot of people have said the White House really needs this ballroom because they don’t have an event space.

And so they’ve hosted these massive events for world leaders in, in temporary tents out on the lawn. And it’s not ideal. It’s expensive and it doesn’t look great to these world leaders,

Micah Tomasella: I’m sure. I’m sure the Democrats will enjoy it whenever they get back in the White House. They will. And that’s the other thing people are saying.

I’m sure they’ll utilize the space in the future.

Conner Jones: That’s the other thing people are saying, right? It’s this ballroom is for the country, it’s for the future. It’s gonna last. It could be there for hundreds of years. This is not just a Trump presidency thing. This is something [00:13:00] presidents of many generations will be able to use.

Okay? Something else happening is obviously the shutdown we are now. If you’re listening on Thursday morning, it is day 31 of the shutdown, which is just insane. It’s ridiculous that we’ve gotten this far. Here’s the implications. They’re really starting to hit now. One is snap food assistance. Basically AKA food stamps is going to be cut off on Saturday, November 1st.

42 million people use those benefits right now. So this is gonna impact a lot of people who do rely on the that to buy groceries. Yeah. Some states are gonna try to help cover that, at least temporarily. Other states are saying you’re gonna need to go to food banks. There’s just not money out there to help pay for these benefits.

So we need to pray for people who will be in a very severe situation with these food stamps being gone. It’s not great. Additionally. Government workers more are getting furloughed. I think 1.4 million have either been furloughed or are working without some sort of pay. This includes air traffic controllers leading up to the big Thanksgiving travel week, which is gonna be chaos if they do not get air traffic controllers and TSA people their paychecks because [00:14:00] that’s just gonna lead to more people not showing up to work.

More delays. Airlines are saying it’s starting to get dangerous with air traffic controllers not having enough in the towers and all that. A lot there, Micah, this all has me wanting to focus on one thing today. Which is just that every single one of these government things where there’s arguments or people can’t come together to agree on something, man, it’s just like a reminder that we should not put our hope in faith or anything really trust and to elected officials or any governments or world leaders, any authority.

It can even be a church authority, right? Like our hope is not in these people of power and position. Our hope is in. The God over everything, right? Yeah. Our God is where we need to place our hope and trust. And I think a government shutdown is a perfect indictment of both parties. Obviously, Republicans and Democrats are doing everything in their power to blame each other, right?

But they’re not coming together with everything in their power to, to solve the problem. They’re, they’re just blaming each other. Selfish.

Micah Tomasella: It’s selfish.

Conner Jones: It is selfish. But I mean, honestly, [00:15:00] Micah, what more should we expect? Honestly? Yeah, we’re, we’re all human. We’re all fallen.

Micah Tomasella: I’m selfish. We’re all selfish.

That’s be selfish. Yeah.

Conner Jones: And then we expect. 500 people to get in a room and agree to something. That that’s just not gonna happen. It doesn’t go that way. And that’s why I’m saying don’t place your trust in government officials. What about institutions when the White House is destroyed, do does that shake your ground of trust?

I hope it doesn’t because it’s not just external in the White House, it’s also internal,

Do you really fully trust everything happening within the Oval Office and within the White House with these fallen sinful humans that are making decisions there? I hope not. I don’t, it’s easy to think that they’re the ones with all the answers, but all you gotta do is watch the movie, the House of Dynamite from this past weekend and see that they do not have all the answers.

Everybody was that good is just human. It’s okay. It’s got some great elements, but it, it doesn’t end amazingly, but it does show you a realistic depiction of what would happen if a nuclear missile was headed towards America and the man, the humans who have to make [00:16:00] decisions in that moment.

Conner Jons: Yeah.

Conner Jones: Honestly, kind of frightening in that way. All that to say, Michael, when we looked at, when we looked to DC. Or any other official, any other authority figure for any perfect answers and direction, we’re gonna just always end up aimless. There’s not gonna be full direction there. We need to turn to God for direction and answers in our life.

And that’s how we’ll find a providential path. Filled with more hope, peace, joy, and we will have more of that than any politician or political party could ever give us. You can feel excitement when your party wins an election, but it’s never gonna fill, fill the gaps of joy and hope and peace in actual direction in your life.

Because that party will, in some way, let you down, but absolutely, God will never let you down every single time. Yep. This, I, I I, one quick example of a, a leader who recognized that this week is the Prime Minister of Jamaica. His name is. Lemme get this right, Andrew Holness. And he was in on an interview leading up to this massive hurricane about to strike his island and essentially leave a lot of destruction on its path.

And he said on this interview, I think it was on CNN, he said, I have been on my knees in [00:17:00] prayer. Yeah. Which is exactly what he should do. And I, it’s incredible to hear a world leader say that. And he is there’s only one place I can go to. I’m not gonna find answers in humans science or technology.

It’s going to be. And God. So he’s praying for his island. He’s praying for his people. That’s powerful, man. ’cause that’s all we’ve got is God, right? He is where we need to turn in moments of this and John 1427, Jesus says, peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you, not as the world gives. Do I give to you?

Let not your hearts be troubled, neither. Let them be afraid. Take that this week. As you think about where you put your hope and trust, is it in a political party? Is it in a world leader? Is it in a, an actual human being in some other position? Is it a CEO, whatever? Is it technology? Is it ai? All of that will let you down.

Remember that God will not though.

Micah Tomasella: Amen. Conner. Good stuff man. Thanks for taking us through that. That was a lot to update us on. So let’s jump into betting scandals and the high cost, what I would call it of sports [00:18:00] gambling, just the overall sports gambling, sports betting landscape that’s creeping closer and closer to being a bigger and bigger deal.

And institutions like the NBA. Are being questioned, right? For their fairness and for their part to their part to play in all of this. When the FBI

Conner Jones: comes knocking on your door and makes 6:00 AM arrests and break the news breaks, it was

Micah Tomasella: very, very, very crazy story. So this fall, the, the NBA is facing a crisis, I’ll call it.

So there’s a massive federal investigation. We all get these alerts that the FBI goes and they arrest. Some pretty prominent people. A head coach of an NBA team and a pretty good guard for an NBA team and an assistant coach and a former player of an NBA team. So what started as whispers about, kind of suspicions about certain things?

It became a full blown scandal shaking the foundation of the league. And so here’s what happened, but. Before I jump into that, this didn’t come out of nowhere though, is what I wanna point out before I jump into the details of all this. It’s a result of sports culture [00:19:00] that decided gambling wasn’t dangerous, that it was profitable.

Mm-hmm. And they fully embraced it. And this is just a part of that. So Conner, you can’t even watch a game now without seeing live odds on the screen. Like the N-B-A-N-F-L-N-H-L. The MLB and even collegiate sports all have an official betting partner. Now, they all have partnerships. The official betting partner, the official, they won’t say gambling.

The official betting partner of this league, of this team betting has become part of the broadcast, part of the branding, and now clearly a part of the problem. So have you noticed this and what have your thoughts been so far, Conner?

Conner Jones: Oh, I’ve definitely noticed it. I wrote an article on this back in August.

Yeah. And we can link that. Yes. You did all about, yes

Micah Tomasella: you

Conner Jones: did. Sports gambling, we talked about this on faith and Clarity. We talked about this even last month here on culture brief. Yes, we did Episode 35, we, and I was calling it the epidemic of sports gambling and how it’s just entered, you know, entered the culture since 2018.

Really? It was around, but it was always kind of underground. Now it’s just. Literally everywhere. The best part [00:20:00] about this whole thing to just exemplify exactly what you’re saying is when they were breaking the news on ESPN, Mike Greenberg was breaking the news of these arrests and at the bottom of the ESPN thing, this all went viral, was literally the ESPN BET ad.

That was on the bottom of the Chiron for ES, espn. It was saying, I know NBA players arrested for gambling and then ESPN bet. Make your bet today. You know, it’s just right. It’s

Micah Tomasella: everywhere. I know. So let me give some context and facts on this before we jump into some of the specifics. ’cause the specifics of this investigation is very interesting.

Almost kind of like the lure heist type of interesting. This is like a mafioso, like the, oh dude. The, the, the mafia is behind some of this. This is, it’s another

Conner Jones: Hollywood script, right? It’s just like this could be a movie,

Micah Tomasella: right? So before 2018, sports betting was mostly illegal outside of Vegas.

Then the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban, and one by one states started to legalize it, right? So seven years later, more than 35 states allow it, and Americans [00:21:00] wager tens of billions of dollars. On sports every year with some estimates, topping a hundred billion betting apps now sponsor.

Halftime shows appear on jerseys and even have lounges Inside stadiums, they’re getting naming rights for teams and for events and for buildings. So what used to happen in back rooms, in the shadows now happens on your phone between quarters, during the game, all of that stuff. And now it’s only a matter of time before the temptation.

Reaches the court itself, and it, it did to a certain extent. So here’s the NBA scandal. Mm-hmm. So on October 23rd, federal authorities announced one of the biggest sports betting crackdowns in US history. More than 30 people across 11 states were arrested like in within an hour. Okay. Who work? Involved in two connected cases.

They’re similar, but they’re different. So I wanna clarify that one involving insider betting and then another involving a rigged underground poker network tied to organized crime. Yeah. You heard me? Yeah, I said that okay. [00:22:00] So among these change among the, those charged is Chauncey Billups.

Potentially a future hall of fame point guard. He was very, very good Dude. He’s in, he’s

Conner Jones: in the Hall of Fame. He got inducted year. He’s already Hall of fame. Okay. Good for him. Yeah, he’s a legend.

Micah Tomasella: He would not have been. Okay, great. Great point. Thanks for calling me out on that because I was literally thinking if he wasn’t in yet, he’s not getting in now.

They, oh no, they won’t let you in with this type of thing. So good thing he got in before.

Conner Jones: Can they take you out? Can he get removed? I don’t know.

Micah Tomasella: Maybe but he is the head coach of the Portland Trailblazers currently. Okay. And then you’ve got Terry, er. Who’s a guard for the Miami Heat. He’s been a very good player throughout his career.

And then Damon Jones, who’s a former player and an assistant coach. Those were the big names that were arrested that morning. So according to federal indictments, Billups and Jones, I’m reading this so I make sure I get it right. Billups and Jones were connected to a high stakes poker game, allegedly run by the New York crime families.

Multiple New York crime families. The games use sophisticated [00:23:00] cheating equipment, including x-ray poker tables, tampered shuffling machines, and special contact lenses that could read marked cards so that the players knew what was coming. Okay. The literal mafia is involved in this corner, like the, the, the actual mafia.

I mean, that’s, that’s just what’s kind of crazy about this. It’s just like a movie.

Conner Jones: I’m not surprised the mafia’s involved with this because they’ve always been the ones trying to rig games and, and rig sports betting. I’m shocked that these guys got themselves involved with the mafia. ’cause that’s dangerous territory, man.

It’s the last place you wanna be. And some of these, it sounds like Rose might’ve been in some gambling debt and that’s why he was trying to get some wins and all that. And the last people you wanna be in debt with is literally the mafia.

Micah Tomasella: Literally the mafia. So Rosie’s case was separate, but Bela related prosecutors alleged he leaked.

Inside information about his playing status to betters who place prop bets on his under stats, meaning, Hey, I’m injured, I’m not playing. So [00:24:00] they’re gonna place a bet saying that he’s going to score less or perform at a lower level. So that truly does tarnish the integrity of what’s happening. Yeah, he pulled himself out of that, but it absolutely does tarnish.

The reputation that a league wants to uphold, like I like, I hate hearing that. So meaning they profited when he scored fewer points or played fewer minutes. Authorities are reviewing at least seven NBA games between February, 2023 and March, 2024 for suspicious betting patterns, and I think that’s probably even like too small of a sample size.

Once you’re in that. I think it affects every single game he plays, not just seven games. Oh yeah. I think it affects every single game he plays. So Commissioner Adam Silver, who runs the NBA, he called the Allegations deeply disturbing. Okay, Adam? Sure. So both Billups and Rose were placed on administrative leave as the FBI investigation continues, and then Congress.

Has now requested, there’s like a joint bill has now requested a full briefing from the league on its gambling oversight. [00:25:00] Like how is it making sure that this doesn’t happen again? How do we make sure that this isn’t happening anywhere else? So even if no games were fixed fully, the damage to public trust is already done.

So the league has helped normalize sports betting and is now facing the fallout of it.

Conner Jones: It’s crazy man. And Adam Silver is kind of under, you know, obviously the radar here because it’s his league, but also the NBA cleared Tyler er. After all these allegations, they got allegations from the sports books who were like, Hey, we noticed some weird activity.

Nobody bet this much money. And he got cleared. And so now that everybody’s like, why did the NBA clear it? There’s just so many questions and the poker games are wild. I did see, see this up? Course they clean.

Micah Tomasella: Yeah. They didn’t want this to come out. I bet you they knew.

Conner Jones: It makes it a lot worse when the FBI and the FBI was intentional on their timing.

They did this the day after the league started their new season, so it took away all the tension from the actual games. It’s just so savage. And then K Mattel is up there at the press conference. He’s I’m gonna show up. It was a. It’s not a great look for the league. And Dr. Jim [00:26:00] Denison made a great point this past week in one of his daily articles on this whole thing about how this is what happened with boxing and horse racing.

Yeah. They ended up getting so tarnished by the cheating and betting scandals that it led. Those two things have lose a lot of prominence in American culture. They never recovered to the, they have not recover, recover point they were at. And the N is finally trying to get back on the up and up to what they were in the nineties.

This, this does not help, man. No,

Micah Tomasella: it doesn’t help. And just the general style of play of. Just run up, pass it once and then shoot A three has become disinteresting for some people too. So that, yes, the NBA specifically has a lot of problems. So let me give some other, lemme give some other leagues that this is happening.

This is not just in the NBA other leagues. Same problem is, is, is what I call this little part of it. So the NBA isn’t alone here, Conner and Major League Baseball. Veteran umpire. Pat Hoberg was fired earlier this year for violating gambling rules, so investigators found, he shared his betting account with a friend who placed more than 140 baseball wagers, totaling over $200,000.

Hoberg didn’t bet himself, [00:27:00] but the league said the breach of trust was enough to end his career. He got off easy, just being fired, just being let go. Mm-hmm. If you have any of your money tied in, if you’re involved with people and you are the one who is officiating, you’re one who’s. Umpiring a game enforcing the rules of a game that absolutely tarnishes every single game that he umpired, right?

He there. There is no way, even if you wanna convince yourself, he consciously didn’t do it. It subconsciously affected his decisions on balls and strikes. Calling people out in 2024 Infielder. Tu Capita Markano was banned for life, he bet on 387 baseball games, including several involving his own team, the San Diego Padres.

So MLB found no evidence. He manipulated outcomes, but the league drew a hard line. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, sure. Not great. So two Cleveland guardian pitchers, Emmanuel Klossy. Very good. Closer, by the way, Luis Ortiz are under investigation currently for suspicious betting patterns tied to [00:28:00] specific in-game events like first pitches or strikeouts.

Both players have been placed on leave, paid leave while the investigation continues. Last one. Meanwhile, the culture of gambling is spreading beyond just professional leagues. This is actually in the NCAA now. NIL and all that stuff. So earlier this month, the NCAA approved a proposal to let college athletes and athletic staff bet on professional sports.

It’s not final across every division yet. Actually just saw the commissioner of the SEC. Greg Sankey asked the NCAA to rescind this. But as of now, as it stands while we’re recording college athletes who are being paid, some of them millions. Can now bet on professional sports. Hey, we’re gonna give 18 year olds millions of dollars, and you can bet on sports too.

That seems to be, that seems to be a great idea. I’m being sarcastic. So athletes still can’t wager on college games or anything involving their own sport, but I just think it’s a slippery slope. So Commissioner [00:29:00] Rob Manfred of the MLB remains vigilant, he says, but the challenge is growing and if the NCAA’s move shows anything, it’s that the line between, there’s a fine line, but the line between.

Off limits and acceptable just kind of keeps moving. Like the goal co the, the goalposts keep moving. If you keep inviting the devil in, eventually he’s gonna do some damage. So there’s, there’s just this concept of sins just gonna take you deeper and farther than you can ever imagine. And so if you’re letting this in, it’s not gonna necessarily have a great impact.

And so let me wrap this up by saying this really matters, and this is why. This isn’t just about gambling vi violations. It’s about. The slow erosion of trust and Dr. Denison’s article, I actually took a lot of the spiritual application from him ’cause I just thought it was really spot on. But specifically the example of horse racing and boxing is a great example of, in their heydays.

At the time, boxing for a long time was one of the most, if not the most popular sport in America for a little while. But then [00:30:00] you let. You let this happen and then now you look back and boxing is not very popular. Horse racing is not very popular because trust was lost. So fans need to believe what they’re watching is real, right?

That every play, that every call, every result is about competition and not about profit, but when money moves faster than morality. Suspicion takes over, right? Mm-hmm. So every bad call starts to look intentional. Every mis missed shot feel, suspect, you start to question it. The game itself just becomes a gamble.

And outside the stadiums, the human cost is rising too. I just wanna touch on this briefly. Experts are warning about a surge in gambling addiction, especially among young men, which we’ve talked about in spades before. We’ve talked about this a lot. What starts as fun or risk-free? A lot of these sites, if you sign up, they’ll give you free money to bet often ends in financial ruin.

It can end in broken families, it can end in your life being turned upside down. I don’t think Chauncey Billups, I don’t think Terry ER started out thinking it would be [00:31:00] this. They have made millions and millions and millions and millions in career, in their career. They’re very respected, and then all of the sudden this happens.

You could say they had it all and then they still. Made the decision to do this. So legalized sports betting wasn’t, was supposed to make fans more engaged, but instead it’s making the games more exploitable, more questionable. We’ve talked about sports gambling quite a bit, but even as a sports fan, I just think that this bothers me.

It can kind of take the fun out of it. And even personally, I start to kind of look at it, questioning it, and I just really don’t wanna feel that way. I don’t wanna be the tin hat, you know, the tinfoil hat guy, but you know, Conner, before I head into the spiritual application, what are your final thoughts on this?

Conner Jones: Yeah, you’re just right. I, I’ve seen a lot this week about exactly what you said. How did these guys, who’ve made. Hundreds of millions of dollars in their career end up in this position. What are they doing? Why would you risk everything for a $200,000 win? Which is what Terry ER got when he pulled himself out of the game early.

Yep. He got $200,000 from the mafia for that. Why would you do that? [00:32:00] And people have pointed out, it’s not just about the money, all that. More money does is allows you to bet more money. Yeah. That’s an addiction. You, you’re addiction, you’re addicted to the thrill of it. You’re addicted to the, just the idea of winning.

And so it can lead down that spiral. And then Terry Sier sounds like he ended up blowing so much of his money that he ended up in a bad position and had to pull himself outta the game in order to try to make up some of his losses. Yep. And so it’s, it’s a dangerous, it’s a dangerous, dangerous game. And we’ve talked about it and we’ll, we’ll link to the past episode and article that we’ve talked about on sports gambling and the dangers of it, the epidemic of it.

You’re right, Micah, it’s like any sin, you start to just dabble a little bit and it’ll go so much further. If you are not, I mean, you just gotta, you gotta be careful and cautious.

Micah Tomasella: Yeah, exactly. You know, at its core. I think that this really isn’t just about sports. I think this topic can be applied to a lot of things, even though that that’s kind of how it’s rearing its ugly head in this situation.

But I think this is actually about integrity. I think there’s this concept of what we do in the darkness will come out in the light. What we do in private will come out. [00:33:00] You know what I mean? Yep. We need accountability. We need to trust God. We need to recognize our sinful, fallen human nature.

So Dr. Jim Denison recently wrote, he wrote this article this past Monday, I think it came out on October 27th. But he wrote in his article that when integrity fails in public, the damages doesn’t. It doesn’t stay contained. It spreads just like a scandal. Can damage trust in a league. Sin can damage the credibility of the church.

So as he put it, the devil is a great economist who does the greatest damage with the least amount of effort. One fall, one public compromise can ripple out and give skeptics another reason to doubt the faith that we represent, if you want to take it that way. But also, almost always, 99.9% of the time that controversy that happens in public.

Years and years of private sin, years and years of private struggle lead to that moment. And sometimes the most gracious thing God can do for us is actually let us taste [00:34:00] some of the the calamity of what our sin causes and then give us a chance to reverse course, right? So it’s all of this private sin comes out.

Into the light. And I mean, that’s exactly what happened in the sports example and really any kind of controversy you can think of. So Dr. Denison reminds believers that we’re not just called to avoid sin, but to live with visible faithfulness. Scripture says to submit daily to the Holy Spirit. That’s Ephesians five 18.

Resist temptation. First Corinthians 10 13. Confess sin quickly, one John one, nine, and make things right when we’ve hurt others. Matthew 5 23 through 24, and keep our focus on what is true and worthy of. Praise Philippians four, eight. So he posed a convicting, a convicting and convincing question at the end of the article, and he said, what sin could you commit that would most damage your witness?

So think about that for a second. I’m thinking about that. That’s where the enemy will aim. That’s where we need to be on guard. That’s where he is gonna try to convince you it’s [00:35:00] not a big deal. It’s fine. The temptation for profit control or reputation doesn’t just show up in sports or the betting business that’s surrounding it.

It shows up in all of us. But God’s call is the same integrity over image, faithfulness over gain. So here’s the challenge. Guard your witness. Be faithful in the small things so you can stand firm when the big moments come your way. Have integrity when no one’s watching because that’s where characters really formed.

You’re not in the spotlight most of the time, right? Those quiet choices, the ones no one even sees or might ever see are the ones that shape the story. Others are gonna tell about your life currently and in the future.

Conner Jones: Yeah. I think even a great political example, just think about this, Nixon, when you hear the name Nixon, what do you think of?

Watergate. One decision that ruined his entire legacy. And he did some good things as

Micah Tomasella: president too. Yeah. But no talk, but it’s all anybody can think

Conner Jones: about, right?

Micah Tomasella: Yeah.

Conner Jones: So just think about that as you go. Yeah. Great, great points, Micah. [00:36:00] Hopefully they this is it with the gambling scandals and this is it, but something tells me there will be more people suspended or arrest.

We’ll just have to see what comes outta this whole thing. I did see one tweet this week about this whole ordeal that was like, man, hopefully Martin SC says he lives long enough to make a movie about this ’cause. This is something straight out of a Scorsese. He needs to, he needs to get started

Micah Tomasella: on it right now.

Yeah. Get, get rolling on it right now and I will go. It’s Come on Marty. I will go to premier night. My goodness. I will

Conner Jones: be there too, man. It’d be interesting. Okay, let’s let’s jump into our mailbag real fast. We’ve hit on our big stories. We’ll get to tune in and check in here in just a minute. But mailbag real quick, we had several people write in several things to us.

Jackie, as you mentioned earlier. Micah, she lives in Canada. She wrote us a great encouraging note, but at the end she said, by the way, I do hope the Blue Jays win the World Series. We in Canada have waited far too long for this blessings, and we hope for your sake, Jackie, that the Blue Jays win. I’ve got my World Series hat on Micah because that’s just what’s happening right now.

This is from, of course, when the Rangers won. So we know what it feels like to win that World Series and we, we hope it happens for you, [00:37:00] Jackie. Ed, he wrote in, and I just thought, this is a funny little comment. This is all he, this is all Ed wrote in. So thank you, ed, for sending this. If America had a king, the government would never shut down.

Yeah. I don’t know if there’s any comments to that. It’s just, there’s there. That’s a fair point. It’s true. That’s a good point. Yeah,

Micah Tomasella: Exactly. ’cause they, yeah. Okay. So thank you guys for writing in. I don’t wanna skip over this because we did tease this at the beginning. So my listener alerted us to new stamps that France is selling, that are scented and smell like croissants.

Croissants. They have done it in the past for lavender and baguettes. So if you could have a food smelling stamp, Conner. What would, what would you want it to smell like and what would be the most American stamp itself?

Conner Jones: First off, love this idea. Shout out to France for doing this. Yeah, France.

Micah Tomasella: I, I wanna get my hands I wanna get my nose on one of these statements.

I, one of these

Conner Jones: I didn’t even know you could scent a stamp like this. Just give a little man a croissant sounds. Smell so good on a stamp, [00:38:00] sniff, croissant, stamp the scratch and sniff man. I think I, I feel like my personal choice, this sounds so weird, but I would do like gravy, you know, I just feel like it would smell so good.

Micah Tomasella: Gravy. Okay. You okay? So as far, okay,

Conner Jones: like Turkey gravy, dude, it would smell like Thanksgiving essentially. Maybe that’s just because Thanksgiving’s coming up.

Micah Tomasella: Okay. Like the most American thing. Maybe like a cheeseburger stamp, make it smell like a quarter pounder with cheese from McDonald’s or something, or Honestly, if you wanna make it Texan, dude, get me like a brisket, get me like a brisket stamp.

Something that smell good. Like some good smoked brisket. Dude. Smoked over 24 hours. Low and slow baby. Hmm. Yeah,

Conner Jones: I think, I think American all around. You’d have to do a burger or french fries or something. Yeah, I think each steak could have its own, like Pennsylvania would do a Philly cheese steak stamp and that would be amazing.

Texas would definitely

Micah Tomasella: be brisket.

Conner Jones: Brisket. Yeah. It’d be awesome.

Micah Tomasella: Yep.

Conner Jones: Anyways, guys, if you have a topic idea, something like that, that a listener just sent us on that, that we were not even aware of, that’s so

Micah Tomasella: fun. Thanks guys.

Conner Jones: Would, would you send that to us? Send us your hot take ideas. Are you working for the federal [00:39:00] government and you want to tell us about your experience being furloughed?

Are you in Canada? Yes. Tell us about your experience, all this stuff. Email us at Culture [email protected] or follow us and DM us on Instagram that’s at Culture Brief Podcast on Instagram. Go check that out or drop a comment. We’ll, we’ll see that too. Alright, Michael, let’s jump in and check in real fast on things we need to know about.

Micah Tomasella: Yeah. Okay. So Hurricane Melissa. So it’s, it’s a Cat five. It’s a category five. The most powerful storm to hit Jamaica since it began records in 1851. So it hit Jamaica southwest coast yesterday with 185 mile an hour winds and a storm surge of up to 13 feet along Jamaica Southern coast. So Prime Minister, as you mentioned, Andrew Holness said, I have been on my knees.

In prayer, it is now approaching Cuba as it slowed down a little bit as a category four. But we’re just praying for the people affected by that natural disaster. The world is broken and we just see that all too often. Yeah. And so we’re praying for all this affected and let’s just all take a deep breath [00:40:00] and question within ourselves.

Okay. I know that this doesn’t affect me directly if I’m in America or if I’m in Canada to our Canadian listeners. We can still pray about it. Yeah. If it doesn’t affect us directly, I’m not saying you gotta let it ruin your day or something like that, but pray about it. Go before the God of the universe and ask him to, to, to spare lives and bring healing and be glorified through this situation.

Yep. Okay, so let’s talk about drug boats in Venezuela. Let’s check in on that. I know everybody wants to know about the drug boats in Venezuela. So as of this recording. Wednesday morning, October 29th, there have been 14 boats destroyed, eight in the Caribbean and six in the Pacific. 57 quote unquote narco terrorists have been killed and now the president ordered the air the aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R.

Ford, the former President Gerald Ford, named after to move from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean. This would allow the US to expand its campaign from airstrikes to small watercraft. To targets on land. If it opts for strikes on Venezuela or elsewhere, you know, they’re [00:41:00] trying to oust the dictator there, Nicholas Maduro.

So this is an evolving situation. I mean, America versus Venezuela, you know, kind of like a communist dictator regime in Venezuela. I mean, they have no chance. But at the same time. Nobody wants a full scale war or American soldiers to die or anything like that. And obviously the legality of bombing drug boats there’s just a lot swirling around this.

So stay tuned for that. This, this could get bigger.

Conner Jones: This yeah. They’re definitely alluding to it getting bigger. We’ll just see what happens there. Yeah. Praying for there’s gonna be so many people that are in Venezuela that are just be in the middle of this, that they don’t. Yeah. They have nothing to do with all of the drug stuff anyways.

Okay. The Louvre, we talked about the Louv heist last week. Another Hollywood style script. Mm-hmm. Hey, there were a couple arrests. So they got two of the suspects that they think were part of the heist, essentially, where they took all the jewels out of the actual Louv museum. One of them was trying to travel to Algeria, the other Tomal, so they were trying to make it to North Africa before they got caught.[00:42:00]

So two of the four suspects arrested. They did not recover any of the jewels. That’s all that they’ve said about this whole thing so far. But just letting you know, there’s a little update there. We’ll see if they get the rest of them. And the jewels recovered. Hey, like we’ve mentioned, the World Series is going on.

Yeah, it’s tied currently as we speak on Wednesday morning. The series is tied four to four two nights ago, Mike. That game went 18 innings. In fact, the Japanese Prime Minister and President Trump stopped their meetings to watch some of that game. ’cause obviously Japan is big on Shhe, Tani, Tani and some of their players on the Dodgers over there.

Yeah, the Dodgers 18 innings, they won with Freddie Freeman’s walk off home run. I did not stay up actually passing. It was almost a

Micah Tomasella: seven hour game, wasn’t it?

Conner Jones: Yeah, dude, it was almost seven hours. It ended at 2:51 AM Eastern. So if you’re in Toronto and you’re a Toronto fan. That stinks, man. That was, that was a long night.

Yeah. But

Micah Tomasella: then, but then the Blue Jays comeback in game four after would’ve, could have been such a demoralizing loss. And they, mm-hmm. They took it to the Dodgers and now it’s tied. Two. Two. We have a great series. I’ve been [00:43:00] reading this World series has been having like record viewership. ’cause I think you’ve got like a whole nation.

Behind one team, and then you’ve got the Dodgers who are such a big brand. And you know, playoff baseball is really special. It’s even if your team’s not playing, just give it a shot and tune in. It’s really special. The atmosphere is great. It’s, it is a, a quintessential American moment. Yeah. It’s, it’s even, it is involved, but they wouldn’t have, they wouldn’t have the baseball team without us.

Conner Jones: Been a fun series to watch. That’s probably true. And, everything else going on with Canada is interesting, but one thing that a lot of Canadians are noticing is their former Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. He’s got a little celebrity relationship going on with Ka Perry. Who, oh, to be honest, Micah, I did not realize had split up with Orlando Bloom, but apparently that happened this last summer.

They

Micah Tomasella: did split. They did split. I did know that. Yes. I actually knew they were dating, oddly enough, and I feel like I never know about this celebrity dating stuff, but I knew they were, I knew they were dating.

Conner Jones: It’s, it’s weird when celebrities and politicians. That, that [00:44:00] mixture. It’s just kind of, I dunno.

But anyways, there’s, there’s your new little Hollywood, Toronto relationship, I guess Ottawa really? Okay. Election day is Tuesday for some people in this nation. Not everybody. You might have some local elections, but the big ones that everybody’s paying attention to. Governor’s race in New Jersey, governor’s race in Virginia and the California redistricting race.

Yeah. These are all gonna be kind of telling of maybe how people feel a year after the 2024 red wave that Trump won, and Republicans won a lot of seats last year. So how are people feeling now? Do they like those policies or do they want to get Democrats back in office? We’ll just see the big, big race that everybody’s paying attention to, of course, is New York City, where Andrew Cuomo is facing the favorite Zoran mom, Donny obviously.

Socialist, if you’ve seen anything about him. He’s got some crazy ideas that he wants to do in New York. Yeah. He’s a socialist. New York, New York is not, I, I would say, does not represent the rest of the country’s electorate. No. As much as people want to say that this is how the country could be going we can dive more into this next week once we see some of the results, but yeah, there’s a lot there’s a lot to take in with this New York [00:45:00] City election.

There’s a little you got an establishment candidate, former governor in Cuomo. Whose dad was governor and everything. And then you’ve got, you’ve got this new guy, 34-year-old mom, Donnie, who a lot of people seem to like. So we’ll just see what happens there. That’s on Tuesday.

Micah Tomasella: Okay. Yeah. Thanks Conner.

So guys, enjoy your Halloween. Mm. Have fun at you. Dressing up ball festivals at your churches, all that stuff. I think my wife and I’ll do something, but our daughters are dressing up and we’re very, very excited to go nice trick or treating and hand out candy and, and all of that stuff. It’s it’s just a fun time to,

Conner Jones: we’re dressing up.

My little guy, 1-year-old as an avocado, so that’s just gonna be funny. Oh,

Micah Tomasella: really? Okay. We, we have a, a Queen Elsa from Frozen and Elmo. You know, it’s what? It’s what? It’s what they want to be, man. I they, I love that dude. That’s amazing.
