During a question and answer session on Twitter this week, Kim Kardashian, who is famous for being famous, was asked who she would like to take a selfie with, dead or alive. Her response: “My dad. Or Jesus. Or Marilyn Monroe. I can’t decide.”
The “Keeping up with the Kardashians” reality TV star is releasing a book of selfies called Kim Kardashian: Selfish (For our non-millennial readers, a selfie is a picture of yourself taken by yourself, usually on a smartphone). Kim, who is a paparazzi favorite and regularly the topic of tabloid journalism, promises that the book will contain some “really racy” photos.
While we could talk about Kim’s interesting selfie choices, I’d rather ask a question. Would Jesus take a selfie with Kim Kardashian? I initially voiced an emphatic “of course not” in my head, but then remembered that Jesus was not as concerned with public relations as I often am. No, the third person of the Trinity, was born in a farm animal’s food trough. He dined with swindlers and spent time talking to adulterers—in public, for all to see! The King of kings and Lord of lords touched the untouchable lepers and healed them. His reputation among the social elite was at best an entertainment spectacle and at worst a blasphemer.
Jesus meets sinners where they are. He did not come to earth and set up his throne on Mount Everest, only taking audience with those who would take the hard journey to climb to the top. “When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: ‘Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ On hearing this, Jesus said to them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.'” Mark 2:16-17.
A friend of mine once said to me, “I’m called to introduce people to Jesus, not clean them up. God can clean up his own kids.” If you know Jesus, you know that his love for you is both undeserved and unencumbered. I am one of God’s kids and I was sick—a mess.
Who do you know that needs a doctor?
