Nepal teenager saved after 6 days under rubble

May 1, 2015 -

Pemba Tamang was rescued yesterday after spending six days under the rubble of a multistory building in Kathmandu, Nepal.  His rescuers worked for five hours to find him after they heard his voice buried beneath the debris.

Andrew Olvera, head of the U.S. disaster team responding to the Nepal earthquake, admits that their operation carries enormous risk from damaged buildings that could collapse on them.  “It’s dangerous but it’s what we do,” said the father of three.  “It’s risk versus gain.  To save a human life, we will risk almost everything.”

What will we risk to save a soul?

Of Nepal’s 28 million people, less than 250,000 are Christian; 252 of its 263 people groups are unreached with the gospel. (Tweet this) The Nepal earthquake underscores the urgency of getting God’s word to the world while there is still time.  There are 2.3 billion people who have never heard the name of Jesus. (Tweet this) We cannot know when the next disaster will send them into a Christ-less eternity.  And we are one day closer to Jesus’ return than ever before.

On May 16, it will be my privilege to speak at a dinner intended to advance evangelism in Nepal and around the globe.  Eric Metaxas is the host for the event, sponsored by East-West Ministries International.  The ministry’s vision is to glorify God by multiplying followers of Jesus in the spiritually darkest areas of the world.

I have known John Maisel, the founder of East-West, for more than 25 years.  John was a college and professional football player before serving in the Marine Corps, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam.  He spent more than a decade working in Communist countries before founding East-West in 1993 to penetrate countries hostile to the gospel.  Dr. Kurt Nelson, the current President and CEO, oversees East-West operations in 54 countries.  He is a brilliant missiologist and gracious servant leader.  He and his wife have nine children, three of whom were adopted from Russia.

“Ignite a Movement” is East-West’s five-year vision to multiply one million new disciples in areas where the people are unreached or have restricted access to the gospel.  By God’s grace, in the first two years of this vision, their ministry strategies have reached 43.8 million people with the gospel, resulting in 2.7 million professions of faith, 398,107 disciples, and 191,950 leaders trained.

I invite you to join us on May 16 as we celebrate what God has done and commit ourselves to what he will do.  (Use ignite50 when you register to receive a discounted rate.)  If you cannot come to Dallas, please pray for us as we seek to share Christ with those who have never heard his name.

Billions are buried beneath the spiritual rubble of our fallen world.  Every Christian should have an Acts 1:8 strategy for reaching them—a plan for sharing Christ with our local community, our larger region, and the “ends of the earth.”  What is yours?
