A tale of two games

April 4, 2012 -

It was the best of games; it was the worst of games.

I attended the Dallas Stars’ hockey game last night, a match they had to win to have any realistic shot at the playoffs. Their loss to San Jose means that the hockey season is probably over in Dallas.

Between periods, I watched on television as another of my favorite teams ended their season in the best way possible. The Baylor Lady Bears defeated Notre Dame, running away with the game in the second half to win the national championship. They are the first NCAA basketball team to win 40 games in a season. Their center, Brittney Griner, stands 6’8″ and could play on any men’s team. I’m glad she’s on our side.

Both the Stars and the Lady Bears played as hard as they could. Both teams are filled with amazing athletes who have devoted their lives to being the best they can be. But the outcome of their games determines their success in our eyes.

It is the same with those of us who follow Jesus. He wants us to be his disciples, people who love and serve him unconditionally. So he gave his church a simple commission: “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). This is success in his eyes, no more and no less. Our skills and abilities, preparation and hard work are all irrelevant if we do not fulfill his purpose for us.

I keep this statement inside my preaching Bible so I can see it every time I speak: “There is one thing that must never be forgotten. It is as if a king had sent you to a foreign country with a task to perform. You go and perform many other tasks. But if you fail to perform the task for which you were sent, it will be as if you had done nothing at all.”
