Tim Tebow was the most exciting player in the NFL last year. Tebowmania swept the country as the young quarterback took over a 1-4 team that hadn’t been to the playoffs in six years. He led them to seven wins in eight starts; they captured their division and defeated the six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the playoffs. He was set to start at quarterback for the Denver Broncos and continue his improbable story.
Then came the most prominent free agent in NFL history. Peyton Manning is arguably the best quarterback of his generation–some would say, the best in history. He has received four MVP awards as the best player in pro football and won the Super Bowl in 2007. He has accumulated more than 50,000 yards passing, scored nearly 400 touchdowns, and has been named to the Pro Bowl 11 times in 14 seasons.
He missed the 2011 season after multiple neck surgeries and was released by the Indianapolis Colts, who saved the $28 million bonus he was due and are set to choose Andrew Luck with the #1 pick in this year’s draft. As the most recruited free agent ever, he was sought by Arizona, Tennessee, San Francisco and Miami before choosing Tim Tebow’s Broncos. He could sign a five-year, $95 million contract and be introduced at a news conference later today.
Now the question is, what will happen to Tim Tebow? The former University of Florida star could be traded back home to Miami or Jacksonville, teams in need of a quarterback. Or he could stay in Denver. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper stated yesterday that he hoped Tebow wouldn’t be traded, but would spend a few years learning from Manning.
While Tebow doesn’t know where he will play next year, I doubt he’s worried. Nor should we be, whatever fears for the future we feel this morning.
What about tomorrow worries you today? What should you do with this fear? Here’s Jesus’ answer: “Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?'” (Matthew 6:31). Why not? For two reasons: “the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them” (v. 32). Worry hurts my witness, showing non-believers that I don’t trust God any more than they do. And it calculates without God, assuming that he doesn’t know my problem.
What should I do, then? “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (v. 33). Make God my King and trust him to rule his kingdom well. Because he is all-knowing, he knows my needs today. Because he is all-powerful, he can meet them. Because he is all-loving, he will do whatever is best for me.
So I’ll name my fears for the future, put them in the omnipotent hands of my Father, and trust him for today. Why do you need to join me?
