Pentagon celebrates gay pride

July 5, 2012 -

“The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”  With these words, CNN’s Anderson Cooper declared his sexual orientation to the world this week.

On the same theme, Facebook has announced marriage icons that depict same-sex couple.  On a person’s user profile, “married” can now be signified with two brides together or two grooms.  Facebook joins Oreo, which has created an ad picturing an Oreo cookie with a rainbow of colored fillings to celebrate “pride.”

Perhaps the most controversial gay-pride event of recent days was the Pentagon’s recent LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) Pride month celebration.  Advocates called the event ” a huge milestone for our LGBT troops and veterans.”  By contrast, the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty note that “military leadership is coming into direct conflict with the morals and standards held almost universally by chaplains and service members of virtually every major faith group in the military.”  Ron Crews, the group’s executive director, stated: “I find it interesting that in the same week that the decision was announced to no longer allow Bibles to be published using military insignia, the Pentagon announced the celebration of homosexuality—something the Scriptures clearly condemn.”

On the day after our nation celebrated its independence, I had hoped to write on something more positive.  But this trend towards acceptance of homosexuality in our nation is clear and frightening.  Contrast the response to Anderson Cooper’s announcement with the uproar when Ellen DeGeneres made her sexual orientation public 15 years ago.  In 1987, 75 percent of Americans thought same-sex relations were “always wrong.”  Now that number stands at 44 percent.  Is this a continuing victory for civil rights and fairness?  Or is something else at work?

Decades ago, gay activists began a strategy to desensitize Americans to homosexuality through positive media characters and celebrity endorsements.  That strategy has escalated in recent years as our culture has been taught to view truth as personal and subjective.  Now for the first time in our nation’s history, a majority of Americans accept as moral a lifestyle that the Bible clearly prohibits.  Would our Founders recognize the society we have become?

July 4 has gone, but the need for patriotic Christians to intercede daily for our nation has never been greater.  I urge you to join me in praying every morning for a great moral revival in America before it’s too late.  May Jeremiah’s prayer for sinful Israel be ours for this nation we love: “Although our sins testify against us, O Lord, do something for the sake of your name.  For our backsliding is great; we have sinned against you” (Jeremiah 14:7).  Would you offer this intercession to God right now?
