Radical Islam: What You Need to Know

Radical Islam: What You Need to Know by Dr. Jim Denison

Why do radical Muslims hate us? How will the death of bin Laden affect this global conflict? What will it take to win the longest war in America’s history?

Jim Denison explains the mind and motives of radical Islam, telling you what you need to know about the greatest threat our nation has ever faced.

Below is a reproduction of the actual entry for October 28, 1949 in its entirety from Jim Elliot's personal journal, from the archives at the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College (Collection 277, Box 1, Folder 8). Credit: Jim Elliot/Wheaton College ArchivesThere's good news in today's news.  A week after Standard & Poor's downgraded the American economy, Fitch Ratings announced yesterday that it was keeping a AAA rating for the world's largest economy.  Fitch, one of the big three ratings agencies, said the outlook for its rating was "stable."

U.S. automakers had their busiest month of factory output since the March 11 earthquake in Japan.  Overall industrial production jumped 0.9 percent, the biggest increase this year.  In addition, consumers spent more on cars, furniture, electronics, and other goods in July.  The number of people who applied for unemployment benefits in the previous week dropped below 400,000 for the first time since early April.

And housing is doing better. Starts fell less than expected last month, while residential construction was up 9.8 percent compared to July of 2010.  New home completions increased by 11.8 percent, the highest since June of 2010.

What does all of this mean for the future of our economy?  I have no idea.  The euro zone economy, hampered by sluggish growth in Germany and stagnation in France, could drag our global economy down.  The deadliest day of the year in Iraq saw 42 apparently coordinated attacks by insurgents on Monday, casting doubts on the future of our engagement there.

What I do know is that life will never be safe on this fallen planet.  The security we all seek is unavailable on this side of paradise.  I used to quote the promise, "The safest place in all the world to be is the center of God's will," but I'm not sure I believe that any more.  At least, not in the way I once did.

John, Jesus' best friend, was persecuted and exiled on Patmos.  James was beheaded (Acts 12:2).  Tradition states that Peter, Andrew, Bartholomew, Philip, and Simon the Zealot were crucified; Matthew and Thomas were speared to death; James and Thaddeus were stoned to death.  Paul was flogged, imprisoned, shipwrecked, and eventually beheaded (cf. 2 Corinthians 11:23-29).

God does not promise us security, but significance.  Our lives may be short or long, but if we live them for our King he transfuses them with purpose and direction.  We can run from conflict and choose safety over courage, but our story on earth will end with a cemetery plot and a gravestone just like everyone else.  What matters is not how long we live but how well.

Jim Elliot was martyred by Waodani warriors at the age of 28.  He left behind a statement in his journal which challenges me every time I read it: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."  Do you agree?

Over the past 2 years I’ve really enjoyed your writing. I am however very disappointed with the latest name change taking God out of the name of your daily blog. Come to think of it I have to look really hard to find God in your heading or your blog. Actually, God is not even in the heading, but Denison is. It seems you’re first and God is way down the list. Please go back to God being first; it just seems what you write is from him through you, and not from you.

Peace,

John, thank you for taking the time to voice your concerns. As God has called our ministry to reach both Christians and the secular market, 'GodIssues' and 'Center for Informed Faith' placed a barrier between us and people we hope to reach by addressing cultural issues. 'Forum on Truth and Culture' perfectly describes what we do, but the name needed a descriptor that was more accessible to everyone. Dr Denison strives to use scripture in every cultural commentary to teach people to teach people to think biblically about the issues of the day. We have received so many great stories from readers who now feel able to forward this email to friends without fear that it will be deleted based on title alone. We hope this tool will be useful to you as well. Thank you for your comment.

"The safest place in all the world to be is the center of God's will," is true. It's the safest place eternally, not necessarily here on earth, as everyone will eventually succumb to a physical death.

I had never heard Jim Elliot's statement before, but it gives one a lot to think about. Thank you for bringing that to our attention.

Have a blessed day.

The thing people are trying to avoid is pain !

"Security" is not the end goal; it is merely the pursuit of creating a defense against the pain we imagine or experience.

Jesus remarked on this reality by noting that "in this life, you will suffer [pain]," so don't spend too much of your concentration trying to avoid what is surely coming to you. Instead, be prepared to endure it by trusting that God will end it at the right time.

Thank you so much for your essays each morning. I am a mom of two young boys and since I am no longer working and don't have a lot of free time, I rely on your essays for my daily news and spiritual reminders. You always speak to me. I've read for a year and a half now and look forward to it every morning. Thank you!

Jim,

I'm in Ethiopia at the moment. Just finished teaching a two weeks "crash course" on "The Bible, God's Message of Salvation for All Mankind" at the Evangelical Bible College in Addis Ababa.

Just read today's devotional and totally agree. "Safe" is a relative term. Safe compared to what? During the Lebanese Civil War we saw some believers killed and others miraculously delivered. Why were some "safe" and others ushered into glory? Only God knows. James was beheaded but Peter was delivered. The only difference I can find is that there is no record of people praying for James to be delivered, but after Peter was put in prison, " . . . the church was earnestly praying to God for him." The prayers of God's people and the purpose of God worked to deliver Peter -- but not James. I guess the safest place is in the will of God if you understand that that may mean an early home-going -- or not! There are no guarantees of physical safety. Only spiritual safety.

Dear Bro. Denison:
I completely agree with the first “John” above regards the new format and emphasis. I have had this feeling of disappointment from day one but was reluctant to bring it up and was fearful that it was my own condition. Alex Ortiz noted this same sentiment two weeks ago. I have long admired how you could come to us day after day with a Christian message that always motivates us to seek God’s will for our lives… I believe that is your loving personality showing thru and I do not want to see it (that)muffled.

While we are at it, the type size in the “comments” section is to small. I can see it O.K; it is just that when several lines are involved it is more difficult to pick up the next line in proper sequence…. The comments of the Dave Kings’ and Ted Hills’ are an important part of my daily experience.

John H.

John, thank you for taking the time to voice your concerns. As God has called our ministry to reach both Christians and non-Christians, 'GodIssues' and 'Center for Informed Faith' placed a barrier between us and people we hope to reach by addressing cultural issues. 'Forum on Truth and Culture' perfectly describes what we do, but the name needed a descriptor that was more accessible to everyone. The Christ-centered message has not changed, and Dr. Denison strives to use scripture in every cultural commentary to teach people to teach people to think biblically about the issues of the day. Growing up in this wonderful country it was hard for me to believe that Christians could and would be put to death. I do believe it now! Seeing that the largest radical opposition to Christianity has a preferred way of execution of those who do not agree with them, beheading, it's likely that many Christians today while face a choice to deny Christ or be beheaded. I pray everyday that should I ever find myself with such a choice that my faith and trust in Jesus Christ will be super charged by the Holy Spirit so that I can stand strong and firm for my Lord Jesus. I never thought that would be a prayer I would need make in this country!

I have no idea what the comment above refers to, or what objection you had to my comment. I did not save my comment and do not remember what my comment was. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Dr. Denison and his ministry goals.
