Wanda Carter holds a family bible which was recovered from the home where a sinkhole opened up underneath late it Thursday evening, swallowing Jeffrey Bush, in Seffner, Florida (Credit: Tampa Bay Online/Luke Johnson)Jeff Bush was asleep in his Seffner, Florida home last Thursday night when a sinkhole collapsed his bedroom and pulled him to his death.  His body is unlikely to ever be recovered from the sinkhole, which now measures 30 feet across and up to 100 feet deep, and will become his final resting place.

Now a second sinkhole has appeared two miles from the first.  It affects two properties, but has not caused any injuries.  Such holes are caused by porous geological bedrock, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.  They open without warning, which means that anyone in an affected area is at risk this morning.

Contrast this tragedy with one of the best stories of the week—the toddler who was cured of HIV.  A baby born with the virus that causes AIDS was given high doses of three antiretroviral drugs within 30 hours of her birth.  Two years later, doctors can find no evidence of HIV in her blood.  She is the first child to be "functionally cured" of HIV, according to researchers.

One other story caught my eye this morning: Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has addressed the Iranian nuclear crisis with this warning: "Words alone will not stop Iran.  Sanctions alone will not stop Iran.  Sanctions must be coupled with a clear and credible military threat if diplomacy and sanctions fail."  He believes that Iran is nearing the "red line" when military action will be needed.

What do these stories have in common?  They illustrate this fact: The sooner we respond to a crisis, the better our chances of resolving it.  Jeff Bush died because a sinkhole opened beneath him without warning.  A baby with HIV has been cured because drugs were administered more quickly than usual.  The Iranian nuclear crisis threatens to escalate because current measures are not effective.

This principle holds across Scripture as well.  Eve listened to the serpent, then examined the forbidden fruit, then ate it, then shared with her husband (Genesis 3:1-6).  David noticed Bathsheba, then learned that she was married, then summoned her to his palace, then slept with her, then tried to cover up their affair, then arranged for the murder of her husband (2 Samuel 11).  Lust has been defined as "the second look."

Jeff Bush had no warning, but you and I cannot say the same: Jesus cautioned us to "watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation" (Matthew 26:41).  I've often reminded congregations that sin will always take us further than we wanted to go, keep us longer than we wanted to stay, and cost us more than we wanted to pay.  It will never be easier to refuse temptation than it is right now.  Why is that fact relevant to you today?

Oh ... that is so true, about sin. It can be as simple as window shopping - if I were to do that, I would end up buying something I didn't need or intend. Or, like popping into the buffet yesterday ... I made a decision prior to "eat a lot" that particular meal. If I want to save money and lose weight - then I need to plan for both of these!

"...sin will always take us further than we wanted to go, keep us longer than we wanted to stay, and cost us more than we wanted to pay. It will never be easier to refuse temptation than it is right now."

This is so deep and I hear the Lord speaking loud and clear. Thanks for your continued insight

Surely, with God's help, humans can find other ways of helping nations find a more Godly way of helping other nations value peace (Iran) other than the kind of violence that we are trying to avoid in the first place. God has a better way. We need to get on board with His plan of more peace, not more violence. Thanks for listening.

Excellent thoughts!

I've had a different thought about the sinkhole. I shared the essay about the SNL blasphemous video ("D'Jesus Uncrossed") with my Bible study group. I asked them to suggest appropriate responses from Christians. One said to turn off the TV and go to bed. One said to write NBC and the sponsors. Out of 50 people, I had hoped for more obvious interest and discussion.

I understand that they had not seen the video and did not match my passion. I told them (heh) that one morning Christians may end up like the man in the Florida sinkhole.....unsuspecting and dead.

The news yesterday said that Sears will pull its ads from the D'Jesus sketch, but will continue advertising on SNL. Big deal.

I have just returned for the 2013 ALPAC in Washington DC As a christian I felt at home with 13,000 people of all walks of life with one concern Israel and it's safety. Indeed we need to take action for Isreal. It was a powerful few days I learaned more about this need for strong sanctions! I hope you will check into this event for next year and hopefully many other in our nation will as well

To my knowledge the greatest crisis in the Middle East - in relation to Iran and its 75 million people - is already being dealt with most profoundly, by a powerful and sustained supernatural 'military' strike by Almighty God and HIS invincible Heavenly army.

This is confirmed by a former Muslim, Reza Safa, who for years now has been broadcasting the Gospel into Iran through his tv program, and in the process has been experiencing an "amazing time of awakening". He has been receiving 300 calls a week from Iranians who have been repeatedly SEEING the Lord Jesus in open appearances and visions...in a 'Landslide Revival & history-making Visitation of God'. His ministry team have been overwhelmed by multitudes of people groups, towns and villages in Iran who have been committing their lives to Jesus Christ as Lord.

Much fervent intercession is needed to uphold this phenomenal move of God in Iran, and to expand it throughout the country and its Government.

This concept is why God tells us to FLEE temptation. Get out of there. We aren't told to fight it, or to challenge it, or to make yourself an example of how to make it through temptation. We are told to FLEE. God, help me to get out of any situation that I feel has the potential of resulting in sin.

We as a nation and as followers of Jesus Christ are walking in a world that puts temptations in our path almost hourly and need to have a way out that is not a knee jerk response. We in the flesh can not side steep temptation nor anticipate its assault or its form. Therefore we need a radar that can detect them and seance we were not endowed with such a device we need one that can see now and then, one Jesus Christ.

This is a great essay today and not many comments. Perhaps silence equals agreement...or maybe it's like giving someone a great gift and they mumble a "thank you" but there's no note in the mail.

Dr. Denison: THANK YOU!

Hi Jim, I've been trying to think of a reponse to your question of the relevance of that it will never be easier to refuse temptation then is right now. I could only give it to the Lord. The only thing that come to me was all we really have is right now. Our lives are but a vapour and subject to Vanity and subject the same in Hope to the Glory of God. Leave it to the Holy Spirit's work in your heart's to work out the details.

Temptation is NOT sin! But evil uses guilt to try and convince us that it is. If we listen to evil we will be lost. All will be tempted and many will be lost. Trusting in God and praying for Devine assistance can assure a victory.

Now there is a conundrum . . . is it sinful to pray for sinkholes in Iran?

When the people of the State of Florida vs Terri Schiavo condemned her to an insidious death, deprived of food and water until she starved to death, they might not have considered the fact that there were underground caverns waiting to open up directly underfoot; and that their cries for mercy might fall on ears as deaf as their own were when so many of us... when the State of Florida turned a deaf ear to Terri's parents begging for help for their precious daughter. Terri's maiden name - Schinldler - yes, she was a Jew. God always, always, always vindicates His people. We pray for the victim of this sink hole and for his family. O God, forgive us and heal us, for your mercies are great. Where ever there is loss of life, let it be enveloped in the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ and Him alone forever and ever, in Jesus' name. Amen
