Whitney Houston bows after performing I Didnt Know My Own Strength at the 2009 American Music Awards in Los Angeles, California November 22, 2009. REUTERS/Mario AnzuoniWhitney Houston's death at the age of 48 is making global headlines this morning.  Her debut album in 1985 made her an international star.  Many believe her 1992 marriage to Bobby Brown began her downward spiral into cocaine and alcohol abuse that ravaged her voice and may have contributed to her death.  While her fans grieve her death, her Father is grieving her life as well.  He gifted her with one of the most remarkable voices of our generation.  Whatever the cause of her death, she died too soon.

The tragedy of Whitney Houston is not the only cause for grief in heaven this morning.  At last night's Grammy Awards, singer Nicki Minaj arrived in a red hooded gown accompanied by a man dressed as the pope.  She then performed on stage as a demon-possessed woman and mocked a Catholic exorcism.  I don't think I've ever seen a more blasphemous performance on television.  What would happen if the Grammys mocked Islam or another religion in the same way?

The tragic irony is that both singers have made public their faith.  Whitney Houston began her singing career at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where her mother still directs the choir.  She told Ebony magazine in 2009, "I thank God that people love me.  But I (really) thank God that God loves me."  And Nicki Minaj wears a tattoo on her left arm with Chinese characters that translate, "God is always with you."

As I was preparing to express my frustration this morning, I sensed the Spirit's leading to read Oswald Chambers' essay for the day.  What I found brought conviction to my soul.  He explains not only our culture's disconnect between faith and life, but my own weakness in this regard as well: "The destiny of my spiritual life is such identification with Jesus Christ that I always hear God, and I know that God always hears me. . . . What hinders me from hearing is that I am taken up with other things.  It is not that I will not hear God, but I am not devoted in the right place.  I am devoted to things, to service, to convictions, and God may say what He likes but I do not hear him."

Jesus told us that when the farmer scatters the seed of the gospel, some will fall among the "thorns."  This is "the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful" (Matthew 13:22).  I am as susceptible to this temptation as anyone.

The good news is that our Father forgives all we confess and redeems even our worst failures if we trust them to him.  In her 2009 interview, Whitney Houston said, "I thank Him for chastening my heart, for never letting go."  Her most famous song is his word to us: "I will always love you."  Do you need that assurance today?

I have say that I was very surprised with LL Cool J that he gave a prayer to start off the Grammy's. I very much thought it was appropriate and I even saw Lady GaGa bow her head and had her eyes closed. What a Great opportunity for those there to realize that we need God in our lifes. Great Job LL

According to news sources, Whitney Houston visited a Popular Hollywood Club on Friday night and took the stage to sing an impromptu song. She chose to sing Jesus Loves Me This I Know. This would have been her last performance on this earth.

Jim, I totally agree with you regarding the Nikki Minaj performance last night. It was sickening. I stopped watching the Grammy's at that point, but did go back for the Paul McCartney performance and ending.

We have heard recently and frequently that "insanity(irrationality) is doing the same thing repeatedly--expecting different results." Obviously, the entertainment industry has not learned this lesson. As obvious is the fact that society, in general, is without understanding as well. Dallas Willard says, "...we treat trivial things as profound, and profound things as trivial..."

The big question is Why?? I believe one reason is that we don't take God seriously. The often quoted Romans 6:23 has been taken in the same vein as many of the tenets of Jesus revealed in the Sermon on the Mount. We give mental assent--emotionality to the words of our Lord, yet think it does not matter in our practical living. Whitney, in her death, testifies to us that what He told the apostles two thousand years ago applies today.

We have lost such a special person/voice in Whitney Houston, we have also experienced her life choices and still loved her. She perhaps has been calling for her Lord and he now has her in his hands. Nicki Minaj is another story of a life gone haywire but in a different manner. I turned the station when this thing came on, I couldn't understand it and was so offended by it. She will pay for that one for sure. How sad to have that trash involved with an award show.

Jim...our prayers have been with you and your family. Thanks for filling in for Pastor David. You are a gifted speaker and your love for the Lord is so evident in your translation of the Word. I also enjoy reading your email daily. Thanks for making the day start off right. God bless.

Thank you for another needed commentary.
We also watched the Grrammies last night and saw the outrageous display of mockery by the so-called-rap-star. I actually had not seen her perform before, but was outraged by this. I do hope the sponsors of the show also show their outrage to the producers and all officials. If they do not, their companies should certainly be boycotted by all who profess to be Christians, not just Catholics. Satan is, for sure,is prowling this earth to destroy as much of our faith as possible and in American so much of it is done as being Politically correct...............This was certainly NOT Political Correctness, it was BLASTFAMY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER.
AND THE CROWD WENT WILD WITH APPLAUSE.

Nikki Minaj is an American citizen right? So she has the same constitutional rights as the rest of us, right? You get my drift... though Christians seem to struggle to get fair play in the media (considering that Jesus said we would be rejected, should we be surprised?), it still does not take away from the fact that everyone is equal when it comes to the constitution. Everyone is equal when they stand before God as well. We're all fallen sinners. The dividing line (set by God Himself) will be Christ and who has Him as their savior and who doesn't. Until then, let's not divide anyone from their guaranteed right to express their views - even and especially if we don't agree with them or even are disgusted by them.

I think Jim's point that if this had been a mockery of Islam or another religion, it would not have been tolerated was well made. Why is it acceptable to mock Christianity, but not other religion under "freedom of speech?"

During our devotion today I turned to a portion of Scripture my husband and I needed to be reminded of more so than we do. In 1 Corinthians 5:10 the Lord reminds us that we will all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. Yielding to the Holy Spirit and fulfilling His will while on this earth I pray we will hear our Saviour say, "Well done thou good and faithful servant." Can we even imagine what it will be like to look into the eyes of Christ when we appear before Him? Father, help us every day to yield to You so we will glorify you and not be ashamed when we face Your Son.
