holding hands over the Bible (Credit: Vibe Images via Fotolia)When Ryan's surgeon walked into our waiting room yesterday around noon, I could see on his face that he was pleased.  In fact, Dr. Oxford told us that surgery could not have gone better.  Ryan should come home from the hospital later today.  Lab results will be back in 5-7 days, determining if next steps are needed.

Today I must try to express my gratitude to you for your incredible intercession and support.  I've been led to do so from another insight I've never considered before today.  As you know, I've been exploring my favorite miracle with you this week.  This morning, let's consider Peter's near-death experience and its relevance for the challenges we face.

Jesus' lead disciple was walking on the water to Jesus, but "when he saw the wind, he was afraid" and began to sink (Matthew 14:30a).  Then he did what any of us should do in a crisis: he cried out, "Lord, save me!" (v. 30b).  And "immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him" (v. 31).  Here's the question that came to me today as I considered this event: why did Jesus reach out his hand to save Peter?  He could heal a centurion's servant and calm storm-tossed waters with just his word (Matthew 8:13, 26).  Clearly, he did not need to touch Peter to save him.

Here's my thought: Jesus touched Peter because that's what Peter needed most in that terrifying moment.  Afraid he was drowning, he needed the physical assurance of his Lord's presence and power.  Since Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8), he can do today all that he has ever done.  He still reaches out his hands to catch those who are sinking in the storms of life.  But now we are those hands: "You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it" (1 Corinthians 12:27).

Our family has felt the powerful hands of God in your ministry to us.  I spoke yesterday with a dear friend who called from Ireland, and prayed with a beloved pastor and his wife who called from Cuba.  Dr. Duane Brooks, Ryan and Candice's wonderful pastor at Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston, drove from a meeting in Waco to Dallas just to be with them.  Jeff and Billie Byrd, our ministry partners for 24 years, spent the day with us.  Members of our ministry board and dear family friends were with us in the hospital.  We have received emails from friends who prayed for Ryan in the Garden of Gethsemane and in Hong Kong.  Notes and emails have come from staff colleagues and members from each church Janet and I have served.  We treasure each and every assurance of your prayers and thank God for your presence with us through this dark valley.

On the way home from the hospital yesterday afternoon, Janet and I stopped by the post office.  No one who saw us knew that our son had cancer surgery that morning.  Nor did we know what crises the people we encountered were facing.  In this fallen world, the only safe thing to do is to show God's love to everyone we see.  The next person you meet may be drowning, and yours is the touch they need.  God works through his people--our family is proof.  Today we thank him for you.

Glad the surgery went well and praying for continued good reports. Thank you for sharing your hear with us and letting us see you in your most vulnerable times.
Your comment about poeple that we encounter every day was so appropriate. We do not know what is going on in their lives behind the smiles on their faces. Like the line from People Need the Lord says....Laughter hides their silent cries...we need to be the light of Jesus too all whom we encounter. Our smile, our touch, our concern may be exactly what they need in that hour.
We continue to pray for Ryan and your family.

I'm positive that just about everyone who is offering encouragement and love right now is absolutely grateful to be able to give back a little bit of the blessing and encouragement that God gives us through you. I know for sure that's how I feel.

You've touched so many lives by choosing to share God's love and His message, and just being a vessel, as God asks of all of us. Many, many people are continually praying for you, Janet, Ryan and Candice.

Tina and I will continue to pray that the results come back as good as the surgery.
You made the statement that Peter needed to feel Jesus's physical touch. Don't you think ther are a lot of people that are missing Jesus due to the fact they feel there is nothing physical to touch or see.

Praie be to God for this step, Jim. I heard the news shortly after noon - and gave thanks. Everything I have heard about Ryan - both from you, Janet, his grandparents and his peers - is that this is a young man whom God has a special hand on. We can trust God, can't we - even with our children. :-)

Love to you and Janet,

Pastor Sam

I know what a relief it is to hear the words of the surgeon. I had spoken to you after the 9:45 service at GABC last Sunday, telling you my husband was a survivor of head/neck cancer. I sent an email to the forum. Minni Elkins responded that she would forward the email to you. I hope she did. My husband and I should both be in the same service this Sunday. I know he would like to introduce himself to you. If Ryan needs radiation, David can speak first hand to radiation to the mouth area. He had 39 treatments, 5 days per week for essentially 8 weeks straight. Oncologists can spin your head with possible side effects of treatment. David and I know first hand about 'grabbing for Christ's hand', over and over. When I would get settled in on the highway to work, I would ball my right hand in a fist on the armrest, imagining that I was holding His hand. We learned alot through that whole experience and it has certainly helped us keep other things in perspective as they have popped up since that time. Cancer is just a disease. There are a multitude of valuable things it can NOT take from you. We knew it going in, but had to put it into pratice.

God bless you and your family,
Ginnie

Dear Jim,

Thank you for reminding us that while our's is a faith that believes in a future that has been perfected by Jesus' loving act on a cruel cross--made by man, but resurrected by an eternal God, we live and interact in an imperfect, fallen physical world--one where pain and suffering may be known or hidden to an observer--therefore, something as simple as a touch, hug, smile, or a word of encouragement can be transforming by the Holy Spirit--both to the lovely and unlovely.

We continue to lift up Ryan and your family in the days ahead.

Wonderful news. So many concerned for you and family. Others love you for your help in times of their need and it is rewarding for us to be able to minister in a small way to you and your family. Prayer is the best we can do, but know that it is coming each and every day. We know that God is on His thrown and uses all things to work for good for those who love the LORD and are called according to his purpose. I have shared your situation with some who are experiencing similar concerns and heart aches and I know your God given words are helping others .........May God continue to bless you, your ministry and your family.

Dear Jim and family,
Having missed the 2011 Bloys camp because I was undergoing surgery for a malignant neck tumor, I have been re-living that amazing whirlwind of medical and Divine intervention this week. My unceasing prayer, in Eugene Peterson's words from Philippians 4: "Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life." The overwhelming sense of peace and assurance that we're in the midst of God's Perfect Will is all we need. We continue to pray for your precious family,

Your comments about the touch of Jesus are so right on. I remember as I was fighting to regain consciousness from a cancer surgery how I sought the touch of another. As my hand joined my wife's, I knew I was safe and secure. So it is with the touch that Jesus brings.

Let me first join with the host of others who in every way possible are attempting to surround you with love and prayers. Second, thank YOU for demonstrating the courage to share this journey with others. I can't imagine a more powerful message than as you have done since Monday. Many years ago I saw that occur when John Claypool wrote of his faith journey through his daughter's cancer. Unfortunately, there were those who were critical that he came down off his pedestal to show that his knees were wobbling even as his feet were on solid ground.

My son was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma a month after mother's day. He surprised me a week after mother's day as he was my gift coming in from Australia. We had just buried my sister-in-law's mother.
He had surgery and only 1/4 of his stomach was taken out, as he had a 10 to 12lb. tumor, which the Lord showed mercy and His
grace. He lost his spleen and one of his
adrenal glands. Since then, he has had radiation and chemo with an experimental shot. His aunt heard of a drink, limuseaweed and has been taking it with the permission of his physician. You see he was on stage 4 of his cancer since two other tumors showed up after his radiation (one in the liver and another in another adrenal gland). A miracle showed the tumor in the liver was gone as if it had never been there and the one in the adrenal gland is dying!!! He has been to another scan and we are awaiting God's miracle. Every day is a miracle for my son, but, for us too. How blessed we are that we an share time, love and memories. What a blessing that we can let everyone know what our Lord does each day for us. I have heard of so many people young and old with cancer since then. The treatments are working for my son, how many others will be saved from this cancer, God only knows.
We await for God's answer and praise Him everyday for whatever His decision is.

Last Oct. my Sis had cancer surgery with radiation following. I left Colorado to care for her for several months. You mentioned that you never know what is on someone's mind around you or what they may be going through. One day at MD Anderson while waiting for my sister in the x-ray waiting room a gentleman starting talking with me about his wife who was having a treatment and told me about his wife's cancer, the hardships they were going through financially and personally. I only know that his wives name is Stephanie from Baton Rouge. They had to rent an apt.for $2,000 a mo. for Stephanie to be close to the hospital & they have three children.I could tell how much pain he was in emotionally. I don't know his name but I listened and told him I would pray for Stephanie, for the family.I had to leave but I think of the needs of this family daily and wish I had gotten their last name. I just feel like I could have done more but Stephanie from Baton Rouge is all I know to tell the Lord. My heart breaks for this young family. Sitting there in that waiting room at first I would have never known the agony that young man was going through and I'm glad I was there to listen. You telling about your Son is so near to my heart & I know what you are feeling at this time and he will be remembered in my prayers and on my heart. - I just learned the Lord has answered many prayers and my Sister is cancer free and I pray will stay cancer free. Our lives: times followed by seasons followed by times, etc. (Daniel 2:21).

The seasons are harder and more strategic; during them, God desires to do TO us so that in the times He can do THROUGH us what will bring glory to Himself and good to others. The seasons always end, and the times always are fruitful if the lessons of the seasons are applied.

May this season pass most quickly and the next time bring a most rich harvest.

It's about the power of touch. During the past year the message that keeps repeating in my head is "the power of His touch"...Lonliness is so devastating because of the loss of the tender touch of another . You are right, Jesus didn't HAVE to touch anyone..just His very breathed word could calm the wind, level the earth, should He so decide. Yet the physical touch is one Peter never would forget... The physical reassurance we are not alone.. Touch people...I mean really touch them. Forget the socially correct greetings. Hug someone who is hurting, touch their hand..get out your hand sanitizer later if you feel the need..but TOUCH SOMEONE. In Revelation God pulled John up when He had collapsed at the very vision of God in his midst. Didn't need to, wanted to.
Blessed..Jean

I saw a very powerful picture recently:
Picture the cross, and Jesus hanging on the cross. Picture the word: "HOLD" above His head. The word: "ON" to the left of His hand. The word: "TO" to the right of His hand. The word: "HOPE" below His feet. To me, to "Hold on to Hope" is to come to the cross and embace Jesus! He is our hope!!

Jim, Janet & your entire family... We are thrilled all went well for Ryan and it has been a privilege to pray for all of you. When I found out last year that I had breast cancer I immediately was shocked, then tears thinking about my husband who has special needs. We made it through the journey and it appears they removed it all with only surgery and radiation needed. I was so thankful for everyone who prayed and I saw the Hand of God place very special people in my life while going through that trial. My surgeon told me the Lord may give me a new ministry. He certainly works so mysteriously. I know the good Lord has very special ministry for Ryan and Candice. It will be exciting to see how they will give glory to our Lord in the days ahead. We will continue to pray. All of you have been on our hearts with tears reading your first email about Ryan and now rejoicing for all the Lord has done and will continue to do through their lives. We know how a trial like this does change you. Ryan, Candice and all of your family are in His Hands and you are safe resting in our Father's arms.
