Jesus Christ with sacred heart statue (Credi: Alfonso de Tomas via Fotolia)Yesterday, the president of the hospital where Ryan is having cancer surgery this morning emailed me David's prayer: "Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me" (Psalm 31:3).  Not long afterwards, a dear friend pointed my attention to this divine promise: "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10).

For more than 30 years I've studied and taught from Matthew 14, where Jesus walked on the stormy Sea of Galilee.  While leading study tours in Israel, I've recited this miracle at the very place where it occurred.  But when I read the biblical texts sent to me by these friends, I was given an insight I'd never considered before.

When Jesus came to his terrified disciples, Peter responded: "Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water" (Matthew 14:28).  At Jesus' invitation, "Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus" (v. 29).  Note that he didn't ask Jesus if he could "come on the water," but if he could "come to you on the water."  He didn't just walk miraculously on the stormy sea--he "walked on the water and came toward Jesus."

I've always focused on the fact that the fisherman walked on the Sea of Galilee.  Today I realize the larger point of the text: he walked toward Jesus.  No matter how high the waves or how strong the winds that are battering my boat and yours, we can triumph over them if we will use them to come to our Lord.

Hudson Taylor was one of the pioneer missionaries to China.  Everything was hard for him--he got sick, conflicted with other missionaries, and grew more and more depressed.  One day he received a letter from his friend John McCarthy, who told him to try "abiding, not striving or struggling."  Christ himself is "the only power for service; the only ground for unchanging joy," McCarthy wrote.

Taylor said, "As I read, I saw it all.  I looked to Jesus, and when I saw, oh, how the joy flowed.  As to work, mine was never so plentiful or so difficult; but the weight and strain are gone."  By the time Hudson Taylor died, his organization had 800 missionaries in China.

One of my favorite hymns invites us to "turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace."  Whatever storms we face today, we can walk on the water if we'll come to Jesus.

2 Cor.4:7 "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us....16"therefore we do not lose heart,. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." Praying......

The Lord revealed to me last week from Luke 24:17, that when we're in the presense of Christ sometimes we must just stand still. The Psalmist records God saying, "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted" (Psalm 46:10). In those still times when life is beyond out control we can see the hand of God. He desires to be exalted! I'm praying for you and Ryan.

Praying for each of you. A preacher friend in San Angelo, TX said it well. "When we face troubles in life, we should run toward Jesus who has his arms wide open and not away from him." Peter walked toward Jesus until he took his eyes off of him.

Thank you for sharing your powerful insight on the Matthew 14 event. Will be chewing on that one all day. Ps. 31:1-5 and Isa. 41:10 are two of my favorites; they never fail to give me the assurance of God's mighty presence. Praying for Ryan and your family.

Five years ago while hosting a Sunday school Super Bowl party at our house, my wife incurred a brain aneurysm. The next several days were the hardest of my life. However, the messages and words from friends and scripture have never been so clear to me as at that time. Your messge today reminded me of that experience. I pray that you and your family will have comfort beyond your understanding in this difficult time.

praying for ryan and your entire family this morning. i wrote a song from that passage entitled "Here at your command." I was always impressed that peter said "bid or command me to come to you on the water." when we put ourselves under His authority, as ephesians 3:21 He "is able to do far more abundantly all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us." He is always still in control even when the winds are roaring and the waves are raging. He will safely bring you to the point where He told you to go when you got in the boat!

Jim and Janet, Just wanted to let you know that Bill and I are praying for Ryan this morning and have been praying since you shared the news of his cancer. I just talked to Timothy this morning and he is praying as well. Thank you for letting us join you on this journey. Your transparency is a witness and testimony to all of us. It is impossible to describe the feelings a parent has when one of our children is hurting or in danger. My heart is heavy for this moment but hopeful because we know the Great Physician!! Psalm 139 says it all.

I am wondering if all walks toward Jesus are "on the water." Moving toward him is most often out of crisis or need (since human nature makes us think we're complete without him. Each step toward him is always one of faith. And, we're all afraid of sinking! It's tough to get out of the boat of self-sufficiency.

Jim, and family,
I learned of Ryan's condition today and was touched deeply and began to pray for his healing and his constant dependency upon the presence and power of our loving God. I am praying for that sustaining grace and "holy anesthetic" for all of you, which shields our earthbound hearts and minds from that which can overwhelm us. The gospel song "He Giveth More Grace" states for the one who would hear, "...when we reach the end of our hoarded resources, our Father's FULL giving has only begun." Claim this truth and rest in the promise that He, "The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth...gives strength to the weary..." Be assured of my personal prayers, the prayers of my family, and the subsequent intercession of the people of First Baptist, San Antonio. Rest in the Lord...Stephen

What a strong faith you are showing for all to see including Ryan. I have just finished my cancer treatment and continue to know that God is in control of my journey. He has been with me each moment. There has not been one instant that I did not feel His love for me.

This has been an unexpected event in my life and I can relate to you unequivocally that this has been the sweetest time of renewal and affirmation of my faith. I have seen my family showing so much love. Oh, I knew they loved me,but how precious to see how sweetly and gently the cared for me. Then my friends never stopped giving to me. But the best were all the prayers that so many gave for me

Then the miracle of being healed right now is mine. I know it may be back, but I know God is with me. His arms surround me with love and I know I am fine.

I know you don't know me, but my prayers are with you all as you go through this difficult time. Trust me it will be a blessed time. It will be a time for others to see God in you as you respond in His love.

Fondly,
Honey minshew

Dr. Denison:

We spoke together briefly earlier today in the surgery waiting area at Baylor Hospital. Your son and my father-in-law had just gone back for their procedures. We hope all is well now with Ryan; my father-in-law's bypass surgery was completed successfully--he also now is in recovery and doing well at this point. Our family and friends have prayed for the Denisons today, too. May the Lord grant you the peace for which He is famous and give fresh things to say about His power to meet needs in human lives.

". . . And it came to pass . . ."--not to stay.

Our grandson (27 yrs. old) took his own life this week. Your scripture and insights have been helpful as we are in our own crisis at this time. The lord is gracious and has given us powerful scripture to met any and all circumstances. Thank you for reminding us of His providence, love, care and protection if we but partake.

Janet and Jim: we just read your email about Ryan's surgery this morning. We were sick to hear about it but immediately prayed for Ryan (and the two of you) and are waiting to hear how the surgery went. We can only imagine your stress and worry. But if anyone understands God's presence under stressful moments, you and Janet do. The two of you have such an amazing way to express Jesus' message.
Thinking of your family and praying for all of you.
