Once again, I must begin today's essay by trying to put into words our family's gratitude for your prayers and encouragement. So many of you have expressed your support for Ryan as he faces cancer surgery tomorrow morning, and for us as we walk with him. You have truly been the body of Christ ministering his peace to us, and we are deeply grateful. One dear friend brought dinner last night and shared a wonderful insight in the card that accompanied her kind gift. She knows that I am exploring Matthew's account of Jesus walking on the stormy Sea of Galilee in this week's essays. So she enclosed this quote: "When you feel like you're drowning, isn't it comforting to know that your lifeguard walks on water?"
As we continue to consider my favorite miracle in Scripture, today I am focusing on this fact: we can do anything God calls us to do, for his will never leads where his grace cannot sustain.
Peter could walk on the water to Jesus because Jesus called him to do so: "'Lord, if it's you,' Peter replied, 'tell me to come to you on the water.' 'Come,' he said" (Matthew 14:28-29). And the fisherman came, focused on the One whose omnipotence suspended him on the storm-tossed waves. However, "when he saw the wind, he was afraid" and he began to sink (v. 30). He could walk in Jesus' power only as long as he trusted his provision.
Yesterday, Janet showed me a remarkable insight in Chris Tiegreen's thoughtful devotional, "At His Feet." Consider this statement: "While the pagan world takes provision as each individual's responsibility, Jesus says the initiative is God's. Above our worries is an active Provider with a perfect sense of timing. He is in control, even when we aren't sure how tomorrow's needs will be met. When we run after provision, we are running after the wrong thing, something that God has claimed as His dominion. We are to run after His kingdom and righteousness. That's what we were made for."
In other words, we cannot receive God's provision if we are trying to provide for ourselves at the same time. I cannot dine at your table while eating at mine. If I give my fears for Ryan to his Father, the King of the universe promises to meet our needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). If I choose self-reliance over Spirit-dependence, I forfeit all his omnipotence can do.
A. W. Tozer was right: "God is looking for those through whom he can do the impossible--what a pity that we plan only the things that we can do by ourselves." What seems impossible in your life today?

Never look ahead to the changes and challenges of life in fear. Instead, as they arise look at them with the full assurance that God, whose you are, will deliver you out of them. Hasn't He kept you safe up to now? So hold His loving hand tightly, and He will lead you safely through all things. And when you cannot stand, He will carry you in His arms.
Do not look ahead to what may happen tomorrow. The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering or He will give you His unwavering strength that you may bear it. Be at peace, then, and set aside all anxious thoughts and worries. May this give you some comfort.

God's peace and blessings be with you all.
And when they got into the boat.
Definitive word is WHEN. I believe that you are in the boat with Jesus, plant your feet firmely, and the wind will cease.
You are loved and lifted up to the throne this morning. Lynda Speak (Tyler)
Please remember, God wants to prepare him for the rest of his life on this earth; and yes, He is not done with you either.
May His name be honored as He chooses to use EACH OF US/HIS children to touch the lives of the many AS ONLY HE KNOWS.
I am praying for your son and your entire family. God is the Great Physisian and I'm praying for the surgical team to know that they are instraments in God's hands to heal your son.
God Bless,
Frances
I love that this is your favorite miracle, I never thought of it as a miracle more a story of what happened. When going through this time I would get a picture in my head of me standing in a storm on the water with Jesus standing in front of me holding my hands and looking me in the eye, holding my gaze and seeing me try to have strength and more my lack of strength. I heard the words, though more emotional words than real words (if that makes any sense) of Jesus saying, “Look at me, don’t look around, keep your eyes on me.” And I would say,” I want to get back in the boat, I don’t want to be here in this storm.” And Jesus would say with the calmness of emotions, “I know you do, but it is not time yet. When it is time I’ll get you back in the boat.”
I do not usually share, but this image came back to me with your words, thank you for sharing your thoughts and prayers.
please accept all our best wishes and prayers for Ryan's surgery tomorrow. I will be praying for wisdom and skill for his surgeons and peace for your family.
i am giving special attention to your postings this last week. i know that even though i do not necessarily feel besieged at this moment, i will need to be reminded of God's promise at some point. the more completely we are prepared, hopefully the less overwhelmed we will feel when the time comes.
thank you -
ps - we are a midland family who attended first baptist when you were here. we miss you still.

You do not know us personally or know our faces but the
entire community of your ministry is praying for your family and Ryan.
You have lifted us through your essays. Encouraged and challenged us to grow closer to God. Now it is our turn to lift you as your family goes through this journey. God is with you and sustaining you and we pray it will all be fine.
I am praying for you all, especially tomorrow as Ryan goes for surgery. We know who goes before him, but fear and uncertainity can be so real. As Jim has reminded us this week, Jesus is in control and all you life verses, Janet, proclaim His faithfulness - keep your hands in His hand and Ryan will be safe in the Lord.
Remembering you so fondly from your days at SPDL, when Ryan was just a lad!! Praying without ceasing.

Our precious ladies' class is praying for all of you and Ryan and know He will hear. We have a great "rep" as awesome prayer warriors with a miraculous track record for answered prayers. (It is truly supernatural...from God). I hope you and Janet feel our love and prayers. Comfort and serenity for you all.
Now, it is our turn to pray for you and your family, for Ryan's health and healing, the doctors, and anyone else who will care for him during his time of recovery and recuperation.
Know that we lift you up in our prayers, reverently but fervently and in our thanks for your family's place in our hearts.
You are strong in God's embrace. We love your family and look forward to hearing updates on Ryan's progress.
Be strong, my friend.
We will be in prayer for Ryan and for your whole family tomorrow. I had to face cancer this past year and I am doing well. As far as we know they removed it all. We pray for 100% victory of healing for Ryan. Stay steadfast and immovable. What a mighty, wonderful God we have and Healer! Bless you all and we ask for a miracle of healing. We have asked for the Lord to work through the surgeon and everyone involved tomorrow. Shalom, shalom peace to all.
