Jesus Walking on Water by Mick McGintyOnce again, I must begin today's essay by trying to put into words our family's gratitude for your prayers and encouragement.  So many of you have expressed your support for Ryan as he faces cancer surgery tomorrow morning, and for us as we walk with him.  You have truly been the body of Christ ministering his peace to us, and we are deeply grateful.

One dear friend brought dinner last night and shared a wonderful insight in the card that accompanied her kind gift.  She knows that I am exploring Matthew's account of Jesus walking on the stormy Sea of Galilee in this week's essays.  So she enclosed this quote: "When you feel like you're drowning, isn't it comforting to know that your lifeguard walks on water?"

As we continue to consider my favorite miracle in Scripture, today I am focusing on this fact: we can do anything God calls us to do, for his will never leads where his grace cannot sustain.

Peter could walk on the water to Jesus because Jesus called him to do so: "'Lord, if it's you,' Peter replied, 'tell me to come to you on the water.'  'Come,' he said" (Matthew 14:28-29).  And the fisherman came, focused on the One whose omnipotence suspended him on the storm-tossed waves.  However, "when he saw the wind, he was afraid" and he began to sink (v. 30).  He could walk in Jesus' power only as long as he trusted his provision.

Yesterday, Janet showed me a remarkable insight in Chris Tiegreen's thoughtful devotional, "At His Feet." Consider this statement: "While the pagan world takes provision as each individual's responsibility, Jesus says the initiative is God's.  Above our worries is an active Provider with a perfect sense of timing.  He is in control, even when we aren't sure how tomorrow's needs will be met.  When we run after provision, we are running after the wrong thing, something that God has claimed as His dominion.  We are to run after His kingdom and righteousness.  That's what we were made for."

In other words, we cannot receive God's provision if we are trying to provide for ourselves at the same time.  I cannot dine at your table while eating at mine.  If I give my fears for Ryan to his Father, the King of the universe promises to meet our needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).  If I choose self-reliance over Spirit-dependence, I forfeit all his omnipotence can do.

A. W. Tozer was right: "God is looking for those through whom he can do the impossible--what a pity that we plan only the things that we can do by ourselves."  What seems impossible in your life today?

Jim and Janet - I would like you to know that I have you, your family, and especially Ryan in my prayers. I have seen God work miraculously in many healing cases over my lifetime. I am confident he will do the same for your son if it is within His will. May God be with you and you family.

I came across this wonderful promise in "Streams In The Desert" this morning. " Surely I am with you always" Matt. 28:20
Never look ahead to the changes and challenges of life in fear. Instead, as they arise look at them with the full assurance that God, whose you are, will deliver you out of them. Hasn't He kept you safe up to now? So hold His loving hand tightly, and He will lead you safely through all things. And when you cannot stand, He will carry you in His arms.
Do not look ahead to what may happen tomorrow. The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering or He will give you His unwavering strength that you may bear it. Be at peace, then, and set aside all anxious thoughts and worries. May this give you some comfort.
Pam Ellerman

Jim Marc was delighted to speak with you at Wing Man the other morning after all these years! We have enjoyed your recent book Radical Islam and have passed it on to others. Know that we are praying for Ryan's healing in the mighty name of Jesus and are honored to stand with you as God uses this to His glory. God will work His perfect and divine will through the hands of the doctors as they take out the cancer tomorrow. His name be praised for making sure it was found and dealt with!

Jim be assured of my prayers for your son today and for your family as you walk through this time. It is often too easy to say that "God is good all the time" when we are not the ones going through the struggle. But he does care for us and will hold you in His hand during these times of struggle. Gog bless you.

My thoughts and prayers are with Ryan, you and family throughout the day Jim. I keep meditating on the fact that God is in control of each moment ,of each day, for each person, according to His time, so that His will be done for the good of His kingdom. Matthew 6:33 had been my life's verse for the last several years and glad that God provided Janet and you with that wonderful thought through Tiegreen's devotional.

God's peace and blessings be with you all.

All too often when tragedy or misfortune strikes, which I have experienced, we turn to God as if He did not know our plight. We think it is all about us, our problem, our issue, and that God's job is to step in and correct or replace what is damaged or fix what is broken. We never give a thought that this thing that has happened has far deeper implications, that there are things that God is using this for that go so far out from our thinking that we can't comprehend it. James says, Consider it all joy when we experience trials and problems. God has a purpose that is not just about our restoration, but is for His Glory. To Glorify God, to bring Glory to the Father thru the Son, while we may get a benefit, we are not the focus of what God is doing. He is Gloryfying Himself and using this event to bring it to Him. We get a side benefit and that is to be a part of His Glorifying Himslef. Let us not think all the problems we face are just about us, that God's sole goal or focus is about us and our issues. He does love us, but all that God does is to designed to bring Glory to Himself. We are most satified in Christ when He is being Glorified in our situations. Let us choose to Glorify our Father thru the Son as we endure these situations in our lives, and that will bring the greatest joy and satisfaction and peace to our lives. God bless.

Matthew 24:14: 32 AMP
And when they got into the boat.

Definitive word is WHEN. I believe that you are in the boat with Jesus, plant your feet firmely, and the wind will cease.
You are loved and lifted up to the throne this morning. Lynda Speak (Tyler)

You are all in my prayers; especially Ryan.
Please remember, God wants to prepare him for the rest of his life on this earth; and yes, He is not done with you either.
May His name be honored as He chooses to use EACH OF US/HIS children to touch the lives of the many AS ONLY HE KNOWS.

A quick background so you may understand my point: I found my husband of 23 years had been having an affair, and was not willing to work on our marriage. I was out of work with teenage children, and starting over. (It was a bit more than that to me than two sentences, but enough you get the idea).
I love that this is your favorite miracle, I never thought of it as a miracle more a story of what happened. When going through this time I would get a picture in my head of me standing in a storm on the water with Jesus standing in front of me holding my hands and looking me in the eye, holding my gaze and seeing me try to have strength and more my lack of strength. I heard the words, though more emotional words than real words (if that makes any sense) of Jesus saying, “Look at me, don’t look around, keep your eyes on me.” And I would say,” I want to get back in the boat, I don’t want to be here in this storm.” And Jesus would say with the calmness of emotions, “I know you do, but it is not time yet. When it is time I’ll get you back in the boat.”
I do not usually share, but this image came back to me with your words, thank you for sharing your thoughts and prayers.

Hey Jim, I am sorry to say that I fell behind on reading your essays, and just got caught up on the last 3 days. Jack and I wanted you and Janet to know that your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Hard times like this are when we truely exercise our faith, and it is often a real workout! Thanks be to God that he has redeemed us and walks with us every step of the journey through this fallen world. We are praying that God will guide the doctors hands during the surgery, and that He will completely heal Ryan. We love you all very much!

Be assured of our prayers for Ryan and the entire Denison family. Our church had a sermon series last summer on the storms of life relating different Bible stories to events (storms) in our everyday lives. Knowing that God is always in control, no matter the storm, is a wonderful comfort. Peace to you and Janet and the rest of the family this week and the coming days.

dr. denison and family -
please accept all our best wishes and prayers for Ryan's surgery tomorrow. I will be praying for wisdom and skill for his surgeons and peace for your family.
i am giving special attention to your postings this last week. i know that even though i do not necessarily feel besieged at this moment, i will need to be reminded of God's promise at some point. the more completely we are prepared, hopefully the less overwhelmed we will feel when the time comes.
thank you -
ps - we are a midland family who attended first baptist when you were here. we miss you still.

Jim. just wanted you to know I will be continuing to lift your family and Ryan up in prayers tomorrow. After walking through a storm of our own for almost a full year, the words of the old hymn are so true - "When the storms of life are raging, stand by me. When the world is tossing me like a ship out on the sea; Thou who never lost a battle, stand by me." God's grace to you all! R.M.Barge

Dear Jim and Janet:
I am praying for you all, especially tomorrow as Ryan goes for surgery. We know who goes before him, but fear and uncertainity can be so real. As Jim has reminded us this week, Jesus is in control and all you life verses, Janet, proclaim His faithfulness - keep your hands in His hand and Ryan will be safe in the Lord.

Remembering you so fondly from your days at SPDL, when Ryan was just a lad!! Praying without ceasing.

We were surprised and honored this summer when you showed up to pray with us before Jacky's surgery. We will be praying for you, Ryan and your family tomorrow morning. I have started reading "Jesus Calling" every morning since you suggested it. It was amazing but not surprising that Matthew 14:28-32 was today's message!

Jim, when our Taylor had cancer you all prayed for her, her doctors, and our family and you uplifted my spirit with your great insights.

Now, it is our turn to pray for you and your family, for Ryan's health and healing, the doctors, and anyone else who will care for him during his time of recovery and recuperation.

Know that we lift you up in our prayers, reverently but fervently and in our thanks for your family's place in our hearts.

You are strong in God's embrace. We love your family and look forward to hearing updates on Ryan's progress.

Be strong, my friend.
