I've rewritten this paragraph five times this morning. Words fail me as I try to express our family's gratitude for your response to yesterday's essay. Your outpouring of support and your promises to pray for us during this crisis mean more to us than I can say. We have heard from seminary friends, members from all four churches we've pastored, and friends we've made since beginning our present ministry. Your kindness is one of the ways God is already redeeming Ryan's cancer. On behalf of our entire family, please know that we cherish your prayers and feel God's strength and peace through your encouragement. The passage in Scripture that is speaking most powerfully to me this week comes from Matthew 14, where Jesus walked on the stormy Sea of Galilee. This is my favorite miracle in Scripture, but it has never meant as much to me as it does now. Yesterday I suggested that this event reveals the inevitable fact of suffering. If Jesus' own disciples, men who abandoned so much for his sake, could follow his direct leadership and still face a storm that threatened their lives, we should not be surprised when pain finds us. But God is present in the storm and walks to us with his peace.
Here's the second fact that speaks to me from this miracle today: suffering changes nothing about the character of God. Jesus is "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). He loved his disciples just as much when the storm overtook their boat as he did before he sent them across the sea.
His response to their fear shows the truth of his character: "Jesus immediately said to them, 'Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid'" (v. 27). "It is I" is the little phrase I want us to consider this morning.
Jesus' statement in the original Greek is ego eimi, literally "I am." As you know, this is the personal name of God himself. When Moses met the Lord at the burning bush and asked his name, he responded, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you'" (Exodus 3:14). "I AM" translates the Hebrew name, YHWH. This is the holiest word in the world to the Jewish people. Many of them refuse to pronounce it even today. It could be translated, "the One who was, is, and ever shall be." It denotes his presence and omnipotence in every crisis of life.
God loves Ryan just as much today as he did before his cancerous tumor began to grow. He will love him as much after Thursday's surgery as he does now. Storms do not change the character of God--they reveal it. They show us that he hurts as we hurt and walks with us through the darkest days of life.
One way God demonstrates his character is through his people. Know that you have been his voice calling across the wind and waves to us: "Don't be afraid." Why is this assurance relevant to your life and fears today?

God Bless.
My sister is Linda Alexander. She sent me your devotional years ago and I have followed them. THis one really hit home in that i too have sons close to the ages of yours. Your faith is helping me in that mine is weak right now though I have known the Lord for over forty years. It seems to get harder instead of easier to trust completely in His will.
I will continue to pray for your family.
Hoping In Him,
Lesa Lewter
My brother a member of the Midland Baptist church introduced me to your devotions a couple of years ago and it has been a blessing to me every since.
I myself am a cancer survivor, I had throat cancer,(on the tonsil) after seven weeks of radiation and chemo I am cancer free for the past year. The worst part was the treatment and the after affects had it not been for my relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and the support of my family I could not have endured the process. My prayers and thoughts are with Ryan and you and Janet. Thank you for sharing and allowing us to be involved in this personal family situation.

We met when we did Anthony Hernandez funeral. I just want you to know that my wife and I are praying for you and your wife, and your son Ryan, during this time. Anthony's wife Cathy got me in touch with you through your Forum. I enjoy this very much....first thing I read in the morning, after the Bible. I really appreciate your stand for His Word and His Kingdom. We will continue to pray. God Bless you.

After reading your essay yesterday plus Janet's blog - I have been praying for you, Janet and your son and new wife. I wake up a lot during the night - usually 3 to 4 times - everytime I woke up your family was strong on my mind. I prayed and could actually "feel" the Holy Spirit's presence as I prayed for you and your family. Janet's blog really got me yesterday - I am a mother and I could tell what she wrote was soemthing only a Godly Mother could write.

I was stunned and saddened over the news of Ryan's cancer. Please know our entire family remains in constant prayer for him and for Janet and you. May God's incomprehensible peace be upon each of you.
I am praying for you and your family, and especially that Ryan will be healed during this trying time. My daughter went through successful cancer surgery this past year and it is quite a blow to hear that diagnosis. But God is always in control. I have a saying posted on my desk that goes, "GOD DOES NOT SHIELD US FROM LIFE'S STORMS; HE SHELTERS US IN LIFE'S STORMS."
Ann and I have been walking with you in our prayers through this storm. We will continue to do so. Thank you so much for your ministry at Green Acres. Only God knows the effects of our privilege of sharing your storm. Our prayers are with Ryan, his wife, brother and the two of you who love him more than life itself. We are also praying for the good physicians that God will use.

May it bring you comfort knowing that Ryan has the prayers of many.
I will keep Ryan and the Denison family in my prayers.
My husbands family has had more than their share of cancer. Both parents ( his mom currently has pancreatic cancer, previously bresast cancer) all 3 of his siblings ( sister twice) and a niece (leukemia twice) have had cancer. He is the only one who has not had cancer. My family us beset with Alzheimer's which I know I will have sooner than I desire! But through all this so many lost have seen the difference Christ makes and have asked, "How can I have what you have?"
Let us rejoice in our trials for they show the very face of God!
Jane Mehringer, FBC Midland All our love!
But then God did an amazing thing. He took me by the shoulders and as much as one can hear the voice of God, I heard Him speak! He said, "Dianne - you are in the hospital for a purpose. Your job is to find that person who needs to hear from Me."
WOW! Of course! It was so simple. How did we miss that. SO - we began to minister to everyone we could. We prayed over people, sang His praises, and shared the love of God at every turn. The response among the hospital staff was nothing short of amazing.
So - this Thursday Ryan and your family have an awesome opportunity. You can be used by God in a MIGHTY way amongst people who so greatly need to hear from Him. So exciting!!!!
God bless you as your family goes on this special mission He has appointed you to.
Praying healing!
Dianne
I love your Jesus and the Sea of Galilee too, esp. since I was there w our trip. My other favorite verse is when Jesus says "In this world will be trouble...but I come to bring you peace."
My prayer now and esp beginning Thursday morning and thru the days is for total cleaning of the malignant area and peace for each of you. I like to pray for practical stuff like plenty of sleep for each of you and health as your body stresses through this.
Yours and Janet's and Ryan's and family's support team is HUGE!

PS: Have you considered creating a Caringbridge site as another platform for His sovereign grace to be on display?
We are praying for you and your family as you face this difficult time. We remember Ryan as a little boy at First Baptist Midland.
May God bless you and your family
We love you. Ben and Anita
We are praying for Ryan as he prepares for surgery and pray for perfect healing by the Great Physician. I pray that you all will experience that peace that passeth all understanding as our Lord takes your hand and walks with you each step through this storm. I visited with a friend who is very ill with cancer on Sunday and am forwarding your devotionals to her husband. The reminder of God's presence will comfort both of them in their journey, too.
Nancy Michael
We are among many praying for Ryan that he will receive the
work of a skilled surgical team and with God's love and guiding hands, Ryan will have a swift and complete recovery.
