Christ in the Storm on the Lake of Galilee (Matthew 8:23-25) by Rembrandt, oil on canvas, 1663I've rewritten this paragraph five times this morning.  Words fail me as I try to express our family's gratitude for your response to yesterday's essay.  Your outpouring of support and your promises to pray for us during this crisis mean more to us than I can say.  We have heard from seminary friends, members from all four churches we've pastored, and friends we've made since beginning our present ministry.  Your kindness is one of the ways God is already redeeming Ryan's cancer.  On behalf of our entire family, please know that we cherish your prayers and feel God's strength and peace through your encouragement.

The passage in Scripture that is speaking most powerfully to me this week comes from Matthew 14, where Jesus walked on the stormy Sea of Galilee.  This is my favorite miracle in Scripture, but it has never meant as much to me as it does now.  Yesterday I suggested that this event reveals the inevitable fact of suffering.  If Jesus' own disciples, men who abandoned so much for his sake, could follow his direct leadership and still face a storm that threatened their lives, we should not be surprised when pain finds us.  But God is present in the storm and walks to us with his peace.

Here's the second fact that speaks to me from this miracle today: suffering changes nothing about the character of God.  Jesus is "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8).  He loved his disciples just as much when the storm overtook their boat as he did before he sent them across the sea.

His response to their fear shows the truth of his character: "Jesus immediately said to them, 'Take courage!  It is I.  Don't be afraid'" (v. 27).  "It is I" is the little phrase I want us to consider this morning.

Jesus' statement in the original Greek is ego eimi, literally "I am."  As you know, this is the personal name of God himself.  When Moses met the Lord at the burning bush and asked his name, he responded, "I AM WHO I AM.  This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you'" (Exodus 3:14).  "I AM" translates the Hebrew name, YHWH.  This is the holiest word in the world to the Jewish people.  Many of them refuse to pronounce it even today.  It could be translated, "the One who was, is, and ever shall be."  It denotes his presence and omnipotence in every crisis of life.

God loves Ryan just as much today as he did before his cancerous tumor began to grow.  He will love him as much after Thursday's surgery as he does now.  Storms do not change the character of God--they reveal it.  They show us that he hurts as we hurt and walks with us through the darkest days of life.

One way God demonstrates his character is through his people.  Know that you have been his voice calling across the wind and waves to us: "Don't be afraid."  Why is this assurance relevant to your life and fears today?

Know that prayers began with your message yesterday and today and will continue tomorrow as Ryan goes through his surgery and recovery. What a big burden to put on a young man but I have no doubt that God is working his miracles even now to help all of you through this time of challenge and concern.

Jim: I never imagined I would respond to your column, but as a long time follower of your ministry please know that you and your family are in my pryers. Your columns are so essential in our lives. My wife is currently holding her alzheimer affected mother watching her last glimpse of sanity diappear before her eyes and would not have the strength to bear up without your words. God Bless you. Dear Lord, send you healing spirit to Ryan and guide the hands of his surgeons. Instill in his parents the peace that passes all understanding. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen

I am praying too for your son Ryan. My heart goes out to your precious family.
My sister is Linda Alexander. She sent me your devotional years ago and I have followed them. THis one really hit home in that i too have sons close to the ages of yours. Your faith is helping me in that mine is weak right now though I have known the Lord for over forty years. It seems to get harder instead of easier to trust completely in His will.
I will continue to pray for your family.
Hoping In Him,

Jim and Janet, I want you to know that you and Ryan and his wife are very present in my mind and prayers as you guys go through this portion of your walk w our wonderful Saviour Jesus Christ. My wife, Melissa, just went through breast cancer and we prayed for perfect surgery, perfect healing and perfect recovery for her. She was cancer free, having had no chemo or radiation, by day 60. I am praying the same perfect healing for Ryan as well. All to the glory of God. By the way, I am the nephew of Dr. Bob Pinder you know in Texas. A dear uncle. God bless you all.

Bro. Denison
My brother a member of the Midland Baptist church introduced me to your devotions a couple of years ago and it has been a blessing to me every since.
I myself am a cancer survivor, I had throat cancer,(on the tonsil) after seven weeks of radiation and chemo I am cancer free for the past year. The worst part was the treatment and the after affects had it not been for my relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and the support of my family I could not have endured the process. My prayers and thoughts are with Ryan and you and Janet. Thank you for sharing and allowing us to be involved in this personal family situation.

I have walked in the midst of the storm where you are walking. My son was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor when he was 3 years old in 1995. Through the prayers and support of many people we made it through the storm--now this same child is attending college and almost a junior.
I will be praying for you and your family.
The song "God of the Storm" by the music group "This Hope" fits this same situation. I hope it encouragees you as much as it encourages me.

Dear Dr. Denison,

After reading your essay yesterday plus Janet's blog - I have been praying for you, Janet and your son and new wife. I wake up a lot during the night - usually 3 to 4 times - everytime I woke up your family was strong on my mind. I prayed and could actually "feel" the Holy Spirit's presence as I prayed for you and your family. Janet's blog really got me yesterday - I am a mother and I could tell what she wrote was soemthing only a Godly Mother could write.

I've come to believe that it is necessary for Christ followers to go through the very same trials, hardships and fearful situations. Through this we can most effectively show the lost the difference Christ makes in our life!! We then have the opportunity to live outwardly the peace and confident hope Christ builds within us!
My husbands family has had more than their share of cancer. Both parents ( his mom currently has pancreatic cancer, previously bresast cancer) all 3 of his siblings ( sister twice) and a niece (leukemia twice) have had cancer. He is the only one who has not had cancer. My family us beset with Alzheimer's which I know I will have sooner than I desire! But through all this so many lost have seen the difference Christ makes and have asked, "How can I have what you have?"
Let us rejoice in our trials for they show the very face of God!
Jane Mehringer, FBC Midland All our love!

Pastor Jim - a few years ago my husband and I went through a very stormy medical time. He had to have five surgeries in six months. We were even in the hospital on Christmas Day. When I would walk down the hall it would seem that the Christmas tree outside his room was absolutely mocking me! I felt so sorry for US!

But then God did an amazing thing. He took me by the shoulders and as much as one can hear the voice of God, I heard Him speak! He said, "Dianne - you are in the hospital for a purpose. Your job is to find that person who needs to hear from Me."

WOW! Of course! It was so simple. How did we miss that. SO - we began to minister to everyone we could. We prayed over people, sang His praises, and shared the love of God at every turn. The response among the hospital staff was nothing short of amazing.

So - this Thursday Ryan and your family have an awesome opportunity. You can be used by God in a MIGHTY way amongst people who so greatly need to hear from Him. So exciting!!!!

God bless you as your family goes on this special mission He has appointed you to.

Praying healing!
Dianne

Dear Jim,
I love your Jesus and the Sea of Galilee too, esp. since I was there w our trip. My other favorite verse is when Jesus says "In this world will be trouble...but I come to bring you peace."
My prayer now and esp beginning Thursday morning and thru the days is for total cleaning of the malignant area and peace for each of you. I like to pray for practical stuff like plenty of sleep for each of you and health as your body stresses through this.
Yours and Janet's and Ryan's and family's support team is HUGE!

On Sunday morning July 12, 2009, the youth from FBC in Shreveport were traveling to youth camp when the church'sbus crashed and rolled on I-20 near Meridian MS. Two beautiful children died that day, and several others were badly injured. Our 15 year old daughter was miraculously rescued from under the bus by Alabama National Guards men and air-lifted to University Medical Center in Jackson within the "golden hour." The presence of God was evidenced by the prayers and ministries of Christians around the world, andbrolled over our family for weeks like sea waves on the beach Know our prayers are that Ryan and your family will know His sustaining presence each day during the days ahead. Dr. Denison, I returned home Sunday evening after a week in Indiana for my mother's cancer surgery and recovery. Her sense of calm was amazing. Not once did she falter and was most reassuring to all who came in contact with her, including her surgeon. I said, "Mom how are you so calm?" And she replied, "It has to be the Holy Spirit working within me. I too marvel at my complete peace regarding this." I hope and pray you and Ryan and the rest of the family give your anxieities to God and let Him shoulder the burden. You have shouldered many for others many times. My prayers continue for you all. God bless.

This is also one of my favorite stories about Jesus. The thing that gripped my mind is that when Peter was in trouble and cried out for help, Jesus did not take the storm away. He reached out and lifted Peter out of the water. When we cry out to Jesus from our fear and helplessness, He doesn't always remove the problem. He will always hold us up and give us the help that we need.

Praise God for his glorious grace and thank you for allowing Him to dispense it as overflow from your faithful obedience to point so many others to Him so consistently through your daily devos and other writings! I'm very grateful for your family's willingness to be transparent in this storm and allow us to be blessed through you by God who wants to calm all the storms in our lives and most of all in our hearts. I pray His joy would more than ever be your very strength as He promises to provide it in infinite and inexhaustible abundance. Tor it is His joy in us amid suffering that stuns and silences the world maybe more than anything and points others to seek Him as they come to the end of the temporary, finite coping we all seek too often. May He manifest, magnify, maximize, and multiply Himself to you and many, many othersthrough this stormy season of your life!

PS: Have you considered creating a Caringbridge site as another platform for His sovereign grace to be on display?
