"We were promised sufferings. They were part of the program. We were even told, 'Blessed are they that mourn.'" So commented C. S. Lewis on the death of his wife. Today our family is experiencing the truth of his words in a way we never expected. Our oldest son has a small malignant tumor in his neck. Ryan will have surgery this Thursday morning to remove it. If all goes well, the prognosis will be good.
Janet and I never imagined that our son would have cancer. He and his brother are doing much better with this than we are--when we talk, they are always the ones who encourage us. Ryan and his wife Candice are so strong in the Lord, and their faith is obvious to anyone who knows them. We are truly proud of them.
I am absolutely sure that God is in charge of all of this. I do not blame him or even ask why this happened. I know that Ryan's cancer is the result of living in a fallen world. His Father grieves when any of his children suffer and walks with us through the deepest valleys. And he redeems all he allows--a statement that has never meant more to me than it does now.
Emotionally, however, a black cloud follows our family wherever we go. Many of you know the feeling, especially those of you who are parents. If something's wrong with one of your children, nothing about the world can be right. You would literally pay any price to trade places with them. You cannot be well until they are.
What weighs heavily on your heart this morning? What fears trouble your mind? This week, rather than commenting on the day's news, I'd like to walk with you through my favorite miracle in Scripture--the night when Jesus walked on the stormy Sea of Galilee (Matthew 14:22-36). I've been to that spot on the lake many times; today I'm there in a way I've never encountered before. Each day I want to suggest a different promise within this remarkable story for us to claim together.
Let's begin with the fact of the storm. The disciples were obeying Jesus' directive when they set sail across the lake (v. 22). They had given up everything to follow their Lord (Mark 10:28). And yet they encountered a crisis that threatened their lives.
C. S. Lewis was right: None of us are immune from the hard parts of life. But when the storms come, God walks to us on the very waters that so frighten us. His word promises us: "The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace" (Psalm 29:10-11). Let's claim his peace together, today.

I will be praying your son has a complete and full recovery, for peace for you, your wife and the rest of his family, and that God's special will and timing are aligned with your desires. If they are not, then I will be praying his loving warmth and peace envelop all of you.
you preserve my life; …with your right hand you save me. The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever--do not abandon the works of your hands. Ps 138:7-8
God's peace and strength be with your family,
edwina
You are in my prayers this morning, and know that I feel your pain. Our younger son (age 34) is walking through some storms also. Like Ryan, he seems to be stronger than we are. Thanks for sharing this morning.

My wife and I have walked a similar path to Ryan and Candice. After 11 months of marriage and in my first semester at Truett, I was diagnoses with Testicular Cancer. Surgery and chemo were required. I can't say I would have ever choose the path, but what God taught me was rich and life transforming. God redeemed what he allowed in our lives. Fifteen years later, I am still able to say Thank you God and Bless the Lord for walking with us through it. I'll be glad to visit with Ryan/Candice to share our journey if they would like. Eph 3:14-21 was my prayer then and continues to be a consistent reminder and prayer from my heart. I join in praying it over your family now.
Our family will be praying for yours in the days to come. If there is a blog or caring bridge place where we could be updated, please let us know. This reminds me of how difficult it must have been for the Father to see His Son suffer. He knows you are hurting. He cares that it hurts, and we trust His very presence with you and Janet and all of the family.
We pray for a perfect result of the surgery, and for the Prince of Peace to reign in your hearts.
Love,
Mary Flo and Dave
Six years ago our oldest son found a knot in his neck. It did turn out to be cancer...stage 4. The specialist in Kansas City wanted to take out part of his jaw and neck and put him through extensive treatment. We feel it was a miracle from God that he was able to get into MD Anderson...they treated the specific area only. He was there for six weeks...did not have to go through any surgery other than having a feeding tube placed during the last part of the radiation treatment. He was outpatient the entire time and has been cancer free for six years. Our God is well able! My prayers are with your family!

I am a cancer survivor and all praise goes to God.
It is good to know that He is there with all of you.
Pam and I will be praying for Ryan, Candice, Janet, you and Craig.

We love you!

My daughter sent me your web site about three years ago. About two years ago, our precious son of 44 years was killed as a innocent 16 year old girl turned in front of him, thinking she did not have to stop. He died twelve hours later as his beautiful wife and three precious children and our family watched and prayed. I was able to pray, not my will but Thine. I only know that I do not know how to explain it, but will just say, The Lord did come through with His promise and did give us a peace that passeth all understanding. I do have one of your writtings next to my computer wiht scripture.
"He who believes in me will live, and though he dies; and who ever lives and believes in Me will never die" John 11:25.
"No Christian eve dies. We simply step from thime into eternity, from this fallen planet into God's glorious Paradise"
These words I have passed on to comfort others. It is put in such a sweet way that I can just see our precious son, Jon, stepping immediately into a glorious paradise with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I pray that your son is totally cured and does not have to suffer. I pray that The Lor will give each and everyone of you a peace that does truly pass all of man's understanding. I put him totally in The Lord's hands and may His Will be done. Amen
2 Cor. 1:4 is absolutely true. God does not comfort us just to make us comfortable, but to make us comforters.
Love from Boone and Peggy
DiAnn and I are praying with you for Ryan's surgery and his recovery. We are asking God to sustain Ryan and Candice, and you two and Craig as you walk through this time. We are also asking for God's complete healing in Ryan's life and for God Almighty to receive glory to His matchless Name! We can say from personal experience...our God is Able!
Love, george and DiAnn... Eph. 3.14-21
May His Peace saturate the entire family.
With Christ's Love,

Look for His grace. Look for His caring. Look for His mercy. Look for His blessings. When you fear, ask Him specifically for what you need. He will provide beyond your understanding. You will never be the same!
Prayerfully,

seems like sometimes when we ask God to act mightily,
He asks us to demonstrate our faith...
And so we trust the One who holds the world in His hands and collects our tears...
I used to tell myself that He is Sovereign...that He is King and that everything that happens to us in life or that we see falls into two categories...
1) God Does It
2) God Allows It
That is incomplete though...but with this post you almost complete it.
It should read:
God Is Sovereign
Thus, whatever happens He either does, or He allows.
And what He allows He redeems.
I suppose the things He does will still remain somewhat as that cloud of unknowing.
Thanks for helping me complete this thought in regards to why he allows some things. :-)
That's claiming the Peace of God.
We are all praying for your family and your son here at Green Acres.
God please guide the surgeon(s) hand(s) with your Holy Spirit and with wisdom.
My prayers are with your son and your family.
May GOD Bless..
Byron
You lift us up everyday with your words, now your followers will lift you and your family.
I too am/will pray for Ryan and his recovery.
Thanks for all you do.
I just read your commentaries for yesterday and today. I heard one time (maybe from you) that the Lord did not promise to take us over the storms or around the storms but rather through the storms. I am praying for the surgeon who will operate on Ryan this week and for all of you as you deal with this storm.
It is with such a heavy heart that I attempt to comfort you...I,too, experienced such news last Fall.My eldest son was diagnosed with stage three cancer and my second oldest son was diagnosed with stage three liver failure. My dear brother was diagnosed with a disease of the central nervous system. These events all occurred in a matter of three weeks.I have known your anxiety, but I also know that God has given me the calm I needed to help my loved ones deal with their trials. It amazes me how they have all risen to meet their challenges. I will pray fervently for your son and his surgeon and a successful outcome.God be with you and Janet.
In Christ's love,
Hilary
