Josh Hamilton talks with Cooper Stone after ceremonial first pitch before game 1 of the ALDS (Credit: AP/Tony Gutierrez)Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was seen drinking in a Dallas area bar Monday evening, according to reports dominating the local news this morning.  Teammate Ian Kinsler came to the pub to persuade Hamilton to return to his home.  The Rangers said they are aware of a "situation," but have not commented further.  This was Hamilton's second alcohol-related relapse in three years.

Drug and alcohol abuse led to his suspension by baseball for the 2003-05 seasons.  Hamilton has credited his conversion to Christianity as the reason for his sobriety and resulting success on the field.  He is a four-time All Star and was voted the American League's Most Valuable Player in 2010.

Skeptics will undoubtedly cite Hamilton's recent relapse as evidence that faith is inadequate or irrelevant to life's greatest challenges.  Here's my question: where would he be without his relationship with Jesus?  According to Hamilton, he'd not only be out of baseball--he might be dead.  After he relapsed in 2009, he formed an accountability team that became a model for other athletes.  Now God wants to redeem this week's setback for good as well.

What can we learn from Hamilton's relapse?

Lesson #1: any of us can fall.  Hebrews 12 speaks of "the sin that so easily entangles" (v. 1)--Puritans called this our "besetting sin."  Most of us struggle with a particular temptation that is more difficult for us to resist than other sins.  Yours may not be mine, but mine may not be yours.  I am not tempted by alcohol, but Josh Hamilton is likely not susceptible to some of the temptations I face.

Lesson #2: we must remain vigilant.  In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus urged his disciples to "watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation" (Matthew 26:41).  His command could be paraphrased, "Continually stay alert to temptation and pray the moment it appears lest you fall into it."

Satan knows and employs those temptations we cannot defeat in our strength, so the moment you face his attack, admit that you need your Father's help.  Erasmus, the 16th century scholar, encouraged us to develop the habit of turning every temptation into prayer.  Nothing vexes the enemy more, he said, than when his evil strategies are used for good.

Lesson #3: we should pray for Josh Hamilton.  Oswald Chambers was right: "Discernment is God's call to intercession, never to fault finding."  I'm praying for the Hamilton family this morning, asking God to redeem this setback for his glory and their good.  And I will "watch and pray" today, lest I fall into my besetting sins as well.

Will you join me?

Jim, your compassion for Josh and reminder that "all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory" is exactly what is expected of each member of God's family. THANK YOU!!

The thing that bothers me most about this situation is the news media. If a well known person stumbles the world will know about it before he or she hits the ground. Josh having professed his faith to the world puts a large bullseye on him. Seems like the world wants to know the badside of a person rather than the good side. We should keep him in our prayers.

You are so on target with mankind today. I struggle as everyone else who loves Jesus. Only the Holy Spirit within can stop us but we have to allow Him.

Just now when I read this article on the internet, I stopped and prayed for Josh Hamilton and his family. I hope all believers will stop and do the same. Yes, we all have to lean on God's promises every day with our own temptations. The difference is ours are mostly private, and Josh Hamilton's are very public. Please join me in lifting him up this day...

When I read of Josh Hamilton's relapse, with tears in my eyes I immediately prayed for him and his family. Thank you for reminding us to do that and not to fall back into our own besetting sins that we thought we had overcome. Great column.

Who knows how any of us would eventually react after throwing a ball to a fan, resulting in the fan's death? Life is tough. Let's pray for our brothers and sisters as we go through the tough times in life.

Great incites and reminders. We all have areas of temptation that we struggle with daily to control. Not a time for condemnation, but rather a time for prayer and support from fellow believers.

Well said, Dr. Denison. Indeed, where would Josh or any of us be on our own. We must avoid our urge to "shoot our wounded".

Cynics would do better to consider that when Hamilton has relapsed, he has taken responsibility for his actions and turned to the one Source he knows will help him return to the best path for his life. Hamilton is an excellent example of our humanity and God's greatness in His response to it. Although it undoubtedly wasn't his goal, Hamilton gives us all the chance to practice the God-like qualities of forgiveness and understanding.

Kind and loving commentary on Josh's situation. No one so far addressed Josh's disease , yes alcoholism is a disease, allery related. When a believer gets the flu, do we jump to moral conclusions?
For Josh - are you connected to a good AA group? have a sponsor? There are Godly AA's who would be blessed with a chance to come along side you in this struggle. God can/will use this to expand your witness in a huge way. Blessings -

Thank you, Dr. Denison for your reminders. I noticed another lesson in this - thank GOD for friends that He places in our lives! I'm sure Josh is grateful (or will be in time) for Ian. Matthew 18:14-15; Luke 22:31-32.

Addiction is a powerful enemy and disease. We all fall short of the glory of God so this is time for prayer and support for Josh and his family, not judgement.

Thank you for a level-headed response to this unfortunate incident. It seems we in the Church again "shoot our wounded," so quick to judge. But Hamilton is no different from any of us - as you so well pointed out. I believe this man's story, and his willingness to live a transparent life for Christ, will open many eyes. I too pray for strength for him and his wonderful wife and children. Only Jesus can provide the power to oversome - and Josh seems to know that.

Josh was in Katy last night (Friday) to speak to a Father-Son gathering in the Merrell Center. He was on spot!! Humble, broken, acknowledging his need of vigilance because of this propensity to return to alcohol abuse. Very well done, and thankfully, well reported by Houston CBS TV station.

Thanks, Jim, for helpful reminders of how much all of us need daily assistance with "darling sins" (C.E. Autry)
