  • How well do you know Jesus?

How well do you know Jesus? Paul told the church in Philippi that nothing was more important to him than knowing Christ (Philippians 3).  God told Jeremiah that he would give people a "heart to know him" so that He could be their God and they[…]

The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo, a famous painting found on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (Credit: Erzalibillas via en.wikipedia.org)The Colorado Coalition of Reason claims that he is.  This week they posted this assertion on three billboards in Boulder along with the request: "Choose reality, it will be better for all of us."  Why did the group take this action?  Their website explains: "We are concerned when religious people feel they have not only the right, but the obligation, to force their religious views on others."

They add: "We don't ask you to stop believing in your version of a super-natural being.  We do ask that you consider not forcing your religious views on others."  So they have created billboards which force their religious views on us.  Is this not a bit contradictory?

Last night it was my privilege to share a public forum on the existence of God with Dr. Steve Sverdlik, a philosophy professor at Southern Methodist University who has become a good friend.  Steve believes that there is no God and that all "miracles" have natural explanations.  He pointed to the rising interest in non-theism today, including the fact that the first "humanist" student organization at SMU began this year.

Those who deny God's existence typically agree with the Colorado group: theism is irrational.  They are a "coalition of reason," in contrast to the non-reason of believers.  If an all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful God exists, we wouldn't need to debate the fact.  Everyone believes the sun exists; why aren't we equally sure its Creator is real?

My response last night was that faith is a relationship.  As with all relationships, it cannot be proven or disproven, only experienced.  We examine the evidence, then step beyond it into a relationship which becomes self-validating.

If you needed proof that this essay was worth your time, you wouldn't have read this far.  You considered the evidence--you've been reading for years, someone recommended this essay to you, etc.  Then you stepped beyond what you could prove into that which you could only experience.  If I needed to prove I'd be a good husband before Janet married me, I'd still be single.  A relationship with God works the same way.  No one can prove--or disprove--his existence.  But everyone who asks him to forgive their mistakes and become their Lord will experience him personally.

How is this rather esoteric conversation relevant to your life this morning?  Why do you need a more personal, intimate, transforming relationship with your Creator?  What struggle, fear, decision, guilt or grief do you need him to help or heal?  Jesus is not an "imaginary friend"--he is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:16).  He is watching you read these words and is praying for you at this moment (Romans 8:34).  His omnipotence is as close as your knees.

Thank you, Dr. Denison, for this daily essay. Today's was especially inspirational for me. It is very assuring to know there are people like yourself that have devoted their life to the study of God. Your knowledge of God astounds me. Thank you for sharing your insights with us.

I find today's essay extremely saddening and disheartening. Although it ended well, the content about the professor and "humanist" organization formed at SMU just broke my heart. The youth of today are searching and literally begging for love and acceptance. My prayer is that they find the only perfect love. My relationship with Christ is the only sustaining force in my life at most times. I cannot imagine trying to "live this life" without Him to get me through, to provide for me, and to sustain me. God bless you and your work. There's still so much work to do...

As to the reality of God, there is no question. Natural man cannot know Him, only those to whom He chooses to reveal Himself. I am one of those to whom the Lord Jesus has done that.
Three times distinctly, and other times in an understanding, He has met me and given Himself to me. There is no way a natural man, who is God's enemy, could find Him, for He has to reveal Himself to them. Religionis man trying to find God, but Christanity is God reaching down to the elect and revealing Himself to them for salvation.
He came to me one night in a church service, and convicted my heart of my need of Him. He came to me when my wife died, and when I did not know how to face anything there, or what to do, He came in and talked to me personally, giving me a great understanding of what the future held. He came to me again, a few days later, and held all the hurt and loss of my wife passing away, in His great and mighty Hands, not to be released ever. He came again after I remarried, and me and my wife were having great difficulty in our relationship. He directed me specifically not to leave my wife. I knew the voice, I knew the Person who spoke to me that morning in the shower. I said, "OK, Lord, if that is what you want, I will do it." Things have over the years gotten better between me and my wife, but it did not miraclously change, but He had a mission for me. And He has blessed beyound measure. I could list some of them, but it would take all day and all this article to just begin to do that. So there is a God. He just does not mess with those who call His existance into question. They think they are so smart, however, He reveals Himself to those who are babes, not the intellectual, and wise in their own eyes. Thanks be to God for His Unspeakable Gift to me, Jesus Christ the Righteous, and my Savior and Redeemer. Praise His Holy Name!

William, your testimony is powerful! I especially appreciate your willingness to honor our God by capitalizing HIS personal pronouns. Many Bible versions and authors today have dropped that significant expression and it makes me sad.

Jim,
The existence of God is a proven fact. He has dealt with others before us whom we know personally. The testimony of two or three establishes a thing.

Further, he has made appearance throughout history to various persons and identified himself to them, and allowed himself to be heard and seen and touched in the person of the Son.

But, the bottom line "proof" comes in the form of testing the faith it takes to act on the promises of his word. As soon as you test him, he proves reliable and true.

How does a "Methodist University" have a professor teaching that God doesn't exist. I would hope that if it is Church sponsored, all funding would be pulled!

An important book that you may want to recommend to your friend, Dr. Steve Sverdlik -- the title of the book "God The Evidence" The Reconciliation of Faith and Reason in a Postsecular World, author Patrick Glynn.

My father has a PhD in Genetics, so as a scientist he has encountered many with similar views as your friend. This is one of only 3 books that my father ever felt was worth a second read and he has recommend it to several.

Hope you and your friend will read and it will open meaningful dialouge. I truly look forward to your daily emails and have shared them often, thank you for your love of our Lord and using your talents for many to enjoy.

The humanists REJECTION OF GOD is in itself the best proof of God's Word; because humanity -since Eve and Adam- chose to believe THE BIGGEST LIE OF ALL,that we humans CAN BE LIKE GOD knowing good and evil.
Tragically, they are so trapped by that lie; mainly because they bouhgt it totally and want to live for themselves and according to their worldly desires.

The "Coalition for Reason" organizational title is all that is needed to understand where the billboard sponsors are in their belief/faith. They are the naturalists/physicalists that I made reference to in yesterday's comments. Their ideology/philosophy/religion/creed is "reason only."

This is the typical response of our Postmodern society that has produced a relativistic culture that allows one's faith, so long as it is kept upstairs in your personal life--Do not bring it downstairs in the "marketplace of ideas." (Read "Total Truth" by Nancy Pearcy).

Wake Up Christians!! We are in a Spiritual Battle! The idea that "God said it--I believe it-that settles it" may be good enough for you and me, but it is not good enough for the unbelieving Postmodern world. Know what you believe, and why you believe it. Then, 1 Peter 3:15 is our 'battle-cry.'

As a graduate (M. A. '68) of Southern Methodist University of Texas (SMUT), I am appalled to see that they have hired a fox (Dr. Sverdlik) to guard the henhouse.

Long-term observation: The space bar appears to be hit twice after every full stop in all articles. Pardon me, if it is no typo.
I seize the opportunity to thank you and all the team including Janet for ALL your labour, it is never taken for granted and always appreciated!

Thank you for the daily devotion and your insights. I can only pray that your friend Steve comes to have a personal relationship with God. I am reminded here to pray for my grandchildren as they go to college. Even though we want to believe they will be taught about a loving God in a christian school, this is not always the case.

I loved the comparison in the relationship with each other, that was great. I have worked on state university campus' for over 12 years and I supervise college students and it breaks my heart to see were they are going and what there thoughts and beliefs are or rather lack of belief. I have always ministered to them thru example and if they ask my advice it I try to always make it Biblical and not the worlds. But I do know this although this world is getting father away from God that is bringing us Christians closer to Him. Keep spreading the gospel, stand firm, the world is watching, and anytime you think you have it rough with oposition, read some of Pauls mission journeys, we have no idea!!!!

I think it is important to know that God is NOT an imaginary friend.God is beyond imagination and beyond conception. Our scripture points to the nameless and formless...beyond the picturing of the mind (or reason). I am convinced this Imaginary God is what most rationalists object to...the anthropomorphic notions of man. Jesus is clear that man is really beyond physicality in his essence, and he demonstrated the truth of this life beyond the apparent physicals "laws". Hebrews urges us to go beyond the first foundations to understand the mysteries, but I meet extremely few who even know the meaning of this scripture. "We have many things we would like to explain" says the writer of Hebrews. But the masses of Christians remain as babes. This is what turns off a more adventurous seeker of God's Truth, which goes beyond words and symbols. Jesus was a symbol, an embodiment of the unspeakable and unimaginable, and writers have used words to point at this. Christians have tried to solidify this into images (idols if you will)and by and large have difficulty with the imageless God of the First commandment. "you shall make yourself no likeness of anything in the heaven above, in the earth beneath or the waters beneath the earth". God is not imaginary and is beyond any images...as is Love..and Truth. This is not expressed in the divisiveness of materiality in which todays religions are enmeshed. Real Love is a Wholeness which we may approach by surrendering the images we hold to...into an inner stillness where the little self has lost its identity...rather than raging about others wrongs. The shortest cut to God is selfless service...beyond any religious boundaries and preferences about images.

Interesting that a professor who believes there is no God would choose to teach at a university that was founded with religious principles.
Thank you for your daily essays .

The timing of the installation of billboards in Boulder just shows that the atheists are scared of the effect Tim Tebow is having on the world! What a great witness Tim Tebow is.

My sister lives close to Boudler, CO. She isn't a believer in Jesus as her Savior and Lord. She has shared with me that there are a lot of people in that area who follow the New Age movement. The thought comes to mind that people want to see that we are a living witness for Jesus. It is a life style that we must show to the world that we are His disciples. Thank you for your walk with our Savior. "Blessed are those who believe and yet not seen!" Help us, Father, to love the lost to life in Christ.

Psalms 1 Talks about relationships with the ungodly, sinners, & Scoffers at God. This could corrupt good morals. But avoiding them might stop evangalism. I have an agnostic friend too. What do you think?

Franklin D. Roosevelt was a superb orator in a class equal to if not better than Winston Churchhill. His speech to a joint session of Congress on December 8, 1941 is still in my memory today, more than 70 years later. Having heard it on the radio, live, in real time, it was one of those moments you don't forget for a lifetime. A few years ago, while on a tour of Washington, D. C. with a group from Park Cities Baptist Church, I and three other veterans of World War II were priveleged to participate in a formal wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown in Arlington National Cemetery.

Following that emotional experience, we visited the "Mall" in Washington and toured the new World War II Memorial. It is a beautiful, impressive structure, except for one thing which to me was a glaring error of omission. Inscribed on one wall of the memorial and etched in stone is an excerpt from the ending words of Roosevelt's speech: "With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph" [omitted: "--so help us God."]

Those omitted four words in Roosevelt's skilled manner of speaking, provided an appropriate, emphatic, and unforgettable climactic ending to the speech which was very much needed for the occasion. This omission detracts from the urgency and spirit of the moment and the dedication of the people. It is another example of the widespread effort to remove any reference to God in our modern day lives. I was very emotionally upset when I saw this on our National Memorial to the heroes of World War II.
