Statue of Benjamin Franklin in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, US government permanent collection. Public domain (Credit: Billy Hathorn via en.wikipedia.org)On Tuesday, the House of Representatives voted on a resolution "reaffirming 'In God We Trust' as the official motto of the United States."  Yesterday, President Obama responded, "I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work."  White House Press Secretary Jay Carney amplified the president's remarks later in the day: "I believe that phrase in the Bible is 'the Lord helps those who help themselves.'"

When I read Mr. Carney's remarks, I debated whether or not to respond to them this morning.  I have always tried to avoid statements in these essays that could be construed as support for a political candidate or party.  I would make the following comment whether Mr. Carney worked for a Democrat or a Republican.

Here's my assertion: "God helps those who help themselves" is the most dangerous belief in America today.

Mr. Carney is unfortunately in the majority: 75% of us believe the statement is in the Bible; 68% of those who profess to be born-again Christians agree.  However, the pronouncement was actually originated by Algernon Sydney in 1698; it made its way into Ben Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac in 1757 and then into the nation's psyche.

It is the quintessential declaration of America's self-help religion.  We are a self-made nation, created by hardworking, courageous pioneers who risked and sacrificed their lives to build and defend our country.  We believe we can do anything if we get up earlier, stay up later, work longer and try harder.  We baptize our self-reliance in the belief that the more we do, the more God will bless us.

What does the Bible actually say?  "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).  How does he view our self-sufficient works?  "All our righteous acts are like filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6).  How can we be saved from our sins?  "While we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly" (Romans 5:6).  Now, "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:13).  When we need his help, how does God respond?  "You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in his distress" (Isaiah 25:4).

Why is Ben Franklin's statement so dangerous?  Because self-reliance is spiritual suicide.  We desperately need God's guidance and help in dealing with the seemingly insurmountable challenges our nation faces today.  But like the father waiting for his prodigal son to return home, he cannot help us unless we admit we need his help.  The first step to national renewal is clear: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves..." (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Would you join me in praying for a spirit of humility and repentance to sweep our nation?  Can it begin with you?

Dr.Denison,

I appreciate your commentary this morning! Our society is so focused on a works based salvation...asking what can I do to improve my status with God? I am excited to know this morning that there is nothing we can do to improve our status with God. He loves us all unconditionally!

So I guess a more biblically sound saying to, "The Lord helps those who help themselves" is, "The Lord helps those who admit they need his help."

I think there is the urgent for America to do the a critical self assessment of their national philosophy with regards to God. I believe that utmost submission to God and his principles will do a lot of good. May God Help America.

Today's essay hits the nail on the head with a mighty blow. That is one thing we Americans have done badly, "I can do it myself". I am afraid this thinking is still very real and we now have no need for God's help. I am 81 years old and without His help I am not sure I can make it through the day. Thanks

I wholly agree with what you say. If the President believes in God, why does he not actively worship Him? instead of himself? We need prayer warriors on their knees praising God for the blessings we enjoy as a nation and for His help in every day matters and for the re-awakening of our nation. America Bless God!! God Bless America!!

It seems that you have jumped into the extreme today. Sounds as if an old issue popped up for you here.It may not be in the bible, but it is certainly not the most dangerous belief in America today. It really fits in well with "you reap what you sow", and the idea of the ascending and descending aspects of grace. You have focused on one part of the message and left out the other. If I plant tomatoes in decent soil and water them, I trust God's natural laws to bring forth tomatoes. This is the meaning I take from the statements you projected so much onto. Jumping to your theme of the dangers of the totally self reliant was uncalled for here, evidently triggered by a misquote.

I'm glad you stepped into this politically charged forum. I heard David Brooks last week at the Dallas Bar Association share statistics on degradation of humility in America. It's no wonder we find ourselves in many of today's crises. When focused on yourself, it's hard to consider those who might be coming after you inheriting debt, cleaning up your mess, and so on.

Humility. Serving. Others.

Might we willingly head that way before we are forced.

People who say, "God helps those who help themselves," might find more agreement if they put their statement in negative terms and said, "I can't believe that God goes out of his way to help those who will not even try to help themselves." I suspect that most Christian physicians feel this way, although many would make an exception for the patient who is too depressed to make an effort.

Perhaps it would be better to say, "God helps those who cannot help themselves"? We should not let prayer become a substitute for work although it's certainly appropriate to pray for guidance in that work.

I wish you had included in your essay this morning some mention of the inappropriate action of Congress, which was what the President was addressing. First of all, why deal with a motto when there are pressing issues for Congress to debate? And, beyond that, the secularization of that motto makes it meaningless as a spiritual expression -- and it violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment.

The article reminded that visting Pastor Mario Perzan recently said in a sermon at our church (I'm paraphrasing) "that this nation has changed so much, in that, in the past, every time we were facing a financial crisis, we immediately turned to God, as a nation. This time, we are turning to government."

I urge you to send a letter to the White House about the central issue of "trusting God". There should not be "but" when you believe in trusting God. The opportunities for a self made man and in trusting God are two separate issues and must be clearly distinguished. What President said is making a mockery of who truly God is and those who trust Him. Does he trust in God or he is saying that us believers do not do our share of taking on the responsibility of hard work and making this country great if we trust in God. This is the cultural issue which deals with belief systems and it needs to be clarified.

We all need to be in fervent prayer for a spiritual awakening since as mentioned many folks believe that they can do all things through ingenuity and had work. Perhaps they need to read scripture which records: “We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.” (Philippians 4:13 NIV) Micah 6:8 records: “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Dr. Denison, Your devotions are always so meaningful...today's especially. I love The Word of God and don't profess to know all I need to know although I've been a Christian since I was six yrs old (am now 72). That phrase pops up so often as coming from The Scriptures and not to be critical - but usually by people who are not familiar with what God's Word really says. I appreciate your integrity and understand why you hesitate to comment in political matters.
Your ending statement this morning, "If my people who are called by my Name.... sums this up beautifully. We (I) need to be on my knees praying for this great nation and our world more. Bless you, Janet and your family. In Christ, Bette Blair

I believe this "boot-strap" philosophy is a seminal thought accompanied by the naturalistic worldview of a closed universe that has a reference point only in and of itself.
A competitor for the second most dangerous idea is perhaps shared by the sixty-eight percent that believe in the deconstruction of the Holy Scripture.

In my opinion, your equating of self-reliance and spiritual suicide is dead wrong.

To be sure, Jay Carney misspoke (not for the first time) when he cited the Bible as support for his self-help quotation. However, in the Books of Matthew and Luke, Jesus mandates that people show initiative and help themselves.

In the Parable of the Talents, set out in Matthew 25:14-30, a man going on a journey gives 5 talents to one servant, 2 talents to another and one talent to a third. The first two servants put their talents to work and double their money; the third simply buries his talent. When the master returns, he commends the first two servants, but takes away the third servant's talent and casts him out into the darkness. The Book of Luke contains a similar parable at 19:12-27.

These parables suggest to me that God wants us to make full use of what He has given us--in other words, help ourselves. I do not believe that such action is inconsistent with our seeking God's help as well.

Sadly, but amen! my newly released book, Revival of Repentance, addresses 2 Chron. 7.14 in detail as i see it as the only true answer to our nation's direction. it is a God-sized hole, and it can only be filled by God, not man. my life verse, Mt. 6.33, smacks in the face of self-reliance. "Seek first His kingdom and righteousness and all these things will be added unto you." Jobs, food, clothing, shelter come directly from His hands. Who shall I trust for these: man or God? El Shaddai!

I really appreciate your comments on this subject. Especially since they coincide with my own and I believe they reflect God's view.

To me it appears that God dealt with nations in the old testament times but focuses more on the individual in modern times. I hear fellow church members say they want to reclaim America for God and I want to respond "It was not his in the first place". If we want a Christian country then it is our responsibility to work to share the gospel with all Americans not legislate superficial behavior that appears to be in line with the Christian belief system.

I also wonder how a nation could apply the principals of Christianity. Do we want a department of defense that turns the other cheek? Secretary of the treasury that sells all we have an gives it to the poor?

I know I am being a little ridiculous but it seem that to a lot of Christian/Americans being a christian nation means passing laws to force others to do what we think is right.

Obama’s statement was true. Carney’s statement, though not found word for word in scripture, was true in content. The fact is, God helps everyone—those who help themselves and those who don’t.’
I was disappointed not to find reference to the following passages. The ‘work ethic’ is very scriptural all throughout His Word. And a ‘work ethic’ and desire to ‘work’ was the point of the comments made yesterday. 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12. Proverbs 10:4. Blessings.

No disagreement about the humility and self reliance issues, Jim, in today's essay. I always appreciate your point of view. However, I think it was unbalanced. Too many Christians, especially men, use those verses as a basis to NOT act. To not speak, when truth is needed. To not act when action is needed. We've become cowards, as a Church. It's an excuse to find safety in inaction. Women seem to have more courage than men, as the Church and our society move towards confused gender roles. The book "Just Do Something", by Kevin DeYoung, a young pastor, is the perfect essay that defines the problem (and the mistake being made). So, do you think God is going to bless those folks with jobs that are occupying Wall Street (assuming some of them are sitting around praying for jobs, and not out looking for a job)? Is God going to bring in the wheat crop for the Kansas farmer that is too lazy to go out and tend his fields? Given that, isn't there a lot of truth in the saying, "God helps those who help themselves"?

self reliance has nothing to do with faith in God. He who has faith in God can rely on himself with through the spirit of God. God will not walk for us, so he gave us legs. Neither will be act or think for us, so he gave us mind and consciousness. Faith without works is the problem with America and the rest of the world. Respectfully.

Bless you Dr. Denison for sharing the really hard lessons of Scripture. Life is ultimately difficult for all of God's children. That is the human condition our Lord permits. We will suffer, we will be saddend, we will be alone, we will be afraid. We are all gifted and obligated to use those gifts. But God does not guarantee results in this life. We cannot control the outcome and life will happen. See Pslam 90. BUT, we have been saved by Jesus and given a spiritual peace not known in this world. Glory to God. Amen

Jim-- this statement, quoted as if from the Bible, is just one of many similar 'Biblical quotes' that people use that are incorrect. Two others that come to mind are 'money is the root of all evil', and 'God won't put more on you than you can bear'.

I am so grateful for your response to what so many people believe is said in the Bible. ("God helps those who help themselves".) And am grateful for you not being afraid to speak up even though some would think you were mixing politics with the church. Christians need to study God's word so they can know when a false statement is conveying the wrong message. God wants us to call on Him for everything. It is time we are heard instead of being afraid to speak out for fear of offending someone!

Billy Graham, one of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time, Billy Graham, counseled Presidents without indicating preference for one party over the other. I therefore hope you'll send your thoughts directly to Mr. Carney and President Obama. It appalls me that, in the NY Times article about the passage of this resolution, Representative Jerrold Nadler called it "an irrelevant agenda." As the article stated, the House cited "a crisis of national identity" as the reason for the resolution. I can't think of anything more relevant than that to all the challenges facing America today.

I have been told over and over by my godly parents to "pray as if it all depended on God.. And work as if it all depended on you".

Is this statement also inaccurate in your view?

I'm sure Mr. Franklin didn't truly mean any disrespect toward God.

I'm also fairly confident that our president was only using the moment to remind us that we need to work as hard as we pray to put people back to work. I believe as well that he has a very Christian perspective when it comes to a strong, rich nation reaching out to those who are sick or in need.
Let's pray that this Christian nation will be more compassionate and less combative in it's approach to some of the explosive issues facing our country and our recovery. Yes... Let's pray humbly for God's assistance and guidance.
Let's pray to be more loving and compassionate in our dealings with those who may believe differently than we do.
I don't believe Jesus ever encouraged his followers to engage in rebellious confrontation of their Roman overlords... Nor did he encourage participation in politics. Am I wrong?

Render unto ceasar ..... Turn the other cheek... Give him the cloak as well....

My personal opinion on this whole subject is that "In God We Trust" is a complete contradiction to what America's actions truly are and I don't believe that statement has any place on our currency. Money is based on greed, an exact opposite of God's Word! I believe that using "In God We Trust" as a "motto" on our money is somewhat a form of manipulation for all America and it should be removed. When I say "manipulation," I'm reminded of 1 John 15-17 and money is the most worldly and greed-producing evil... that is my honest opinion.

Believing that "God helps him who helps himself" does not mean that God does not help us, regardless of what we believe. What matters is that we be in obedience to God's word, as revealed in the Bible. What obedience? To apply our talents. To obey our laws so we can serve God. To help the needy, and the poor in spirit. To love our fellow man. To study to show ourselves approved to God and man. Something beyond our understanding happens when we help ourselves by being in obedience to God's word, and God in us, with us, through us, by us, and for us not only helps us, but guides us through every second of our lives. I humbly pray my every thought, word and action be a prayer. I pray that the fruits of my labor be good, and be blessed. I have labored around the clock, day and night, for many decades, serving God, country, and family, and my labor has been richly rewarded. I have studied for decades to understand life and the Christian Bible, and my study has been richly rewarded, for I was once very poor, and had no home, and was totally dependent on God's love to provide for me through his saints.

The significance of any quote, Biblical or otherwise, lies in it's capacity to trigger a thought in us. Sadly, the thought may be a justification of misunderstanding, but at other times, new thinking can also result. I've heard this quote include the word 'only' as well, as in 'God only helps those who help themselves' which is particularly ugly in its sense. Reading the comments above, one sees often how old thinking is triggered and used to justify viewpoints all over the spectrum. Jesus sought active participants in their relationship with God: "seek", "ask", "knock" and he counseled for a private, close-the-door prayer relationship, too. He told us to 'render unto Caesar', love our neighbors as ourselves, love God with everything we have, and that the meek will inherit the earth. He taught simple unifying principles that mankind has turned into more and more Towers of Babel. So, beware the trap of justification. Jesus said simply that two principles were the foundation for all the laws and prophets. Start with those and ask yourself how any form of 'God helps those who help themselves' fits their intent. Remember, Jesus warned the rich and the officious that they couldn't hide behind their successes and their rules, that piety was not for show, but that each of us is ultimately responsible for what we did and did not do for our neighbors, not for ourselves. For those who would trash government, consider this: American government was the first effort since Jesus' time to put sovereign power in the hands of We the People instead of a powerful few, and that government is the one institution in society charged with dealing with the acts of all of us together. In America, we can say, and must, that 'the government' is simply another way of saying 'we'. The moment we think it's a 'them' is the moment we become like the Pharisees who separated their beliefs from their own personal responsibilities in the world.
